A subtle shift is underway in India's dynamic skincare market as Japanese beauty (J-beauty) trends, characterized by their focus on hydration, prevention, and simplicity, begin to challenge the dominance of K-beauty.
For years, K-beauty, with its elaborate multi-step routines and the pursuit of a luminous 'glass skin' aesthetic, captivated young Indian consumers. Gen Z, in particular, embraced the aspirational and trend-driven innovations, layering products in a dedicated ritual.
The Rise of Mochi Skin
However, a quieter beauty philosophy is now emerging, mirroring the 'quiet luxury' movement in fashion. Japanese beauty, or J-beauty, is gaining traction by emphasizing maintenance over dramatic transformation, offering a less performative and excessive approach to skincare. Radhika Ghai, Founder and CEO of kindlife, a beauty and wellness e-commerce platform, notes that Indian consumers are responding positively. "We are seeing a significant shift driven by Gen Z’s demand for high-efficacy products, a space where J-Beauty naturally excels," Ghai states.
Central to this evolution is the growing preference for 'Mochi skin.' Named after the soft, chewy Japanese dessert, this aesthetic champions soft, pillowy, and deeply hydrated skin. Unlike the highly reflective 'glass skin,' 'Mochi skin' offers a subtler, more natural finish. "While the ‘glass skin’ look is stunning on camera, the high-shine finish can often feel sticky or look oily—not suitable for weather like India," explains Sungjemlila Longkumer, a certified cosmetologist and popular skincare content creator known as 'sungjemish' on Instagram. "The ‘Mochi Skin’ trend is gaining traction because it feels more attainable and comfortable."
Why J-Beauty Resonates in India
The appeal of J-beauty in India is deeply tied to climatic realities. In a country marked by humidity, heat, and pollution, lightweight formulations are crucial. Longkumer highlights J-beauty's emphasis on prevention and hydration over aggressive correction, viewing it as a long-term investment in skin barrier health. This focus on technical precision, heritage formulations, refined textures, and rigorous testing standards sets J-beauty apart from the rapid trend cycles often seen in K-beauty.
Social media has also played a pivotal role, fostering greater ingredient literacy among young consumers. Terms like ceramides and peptides are now common parlance, and sunscreen has transitioned from a seasonal product to an everyday essential. Japanese sunscreens, particularly their lightweight, non-greasy formulations like Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence, have achieved cult status for their suitability in India's humid climate.
A Cultural Shift Towards Sustainability
Beyond product efficacy, J-beauty’s growing appeal reflects a broader cultural mood. After years of aesthetic maximalism, consumers are increasingly seeking restraint and sustainable routines. Shreya Sen, a college student from Bengaluru, exemplifies this shift, expressing a desire for simpler routines focused on skin barrier health and elasticity. This growing instinct to invest in fewer, higher-quality products underscores a move away from over-exfoliation and trend fatigue towards routines that prioritize recovery and long-term skin health.
Ghai believes this is just the beginning for J-beauty in India. "As accessibility improves, J-beauty will transition from being an ‘alternative’ choice to a foundational staple in the Indian household," she predicts. The future of skincare appears to lean towards routines that are both doable and quietly effective, aligning with daily life rather than demanding extensive, complicated steps.
