Global investment firm KKR has announced its acquisition of a minority stake in BookMyShow, India's leading entertainment ticketing platform. The strategic investment is intended to bolster BookMyShow's next phase of growth, with a strong focus on scaling its live entertainment business and enhancing its comprehensive service offerings across India.
BookMyShow, founded in 2007, has evolved significantly from primarily an online movie ticketing service to a broad entertainment company. It now encompasses movies, live entertainment, and various experiences. Its dedicated live entertainment division, BookMyShow Live, manages the entire value chain, from securing talent and intellectual properties to production, promotion, and audience development.
Expanding India's Live Entertainment Landscape
The platform currently serves over 700 towns and cities nationwide. With KKR's backing, BookMyShow plans to further expand its diverse live entertainment portfolio, which already includes major music concerts, theatrical productions, live performances, and sports events.
Akshay Tanna, Partner and Head of India Private Equity at KKR, expressed confidence in the venture. "BookMyShow has been a pioneer in delivering high-quality entertainment experiences in India," Tanna stated. KKR's investment underscores its belief in India's burgeoning entertainment sector, driven by increasing discretionary spending, a large and youthful consumer base, and a growing demand for immersive live experiences.
Strategic Partnership for Future Growth
Ashish Hemrajani, Founder and CEO of BookMyShow, highlighted the importance of the partnership. He noted that KKR's extensive global perspective and deep expertise in consumer businesses would be instrumental in guiding the company through its next growth phase.
BookMyShow Live has been responsible for bringing numerous high-profile events to India, including Lollapalooza India, U2's The Joshua Tree Tour, NBA games, Disney's Aladdin, and Cirque du Soleil BAZZ. They have also collaborated with international music icons such as Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Travis Scott, Linkin Park, John Mayer, Guns N' Roses, Post Malone, and Justin Bieber.
While the financial specifics of the deal were not disclosed, the transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals. BookMyShow's existing investor base includes prominent names like Network18 (part of Reliance Industries), Accel Partners, Elevation Capital, Stripes Group, and TPG. Avendus Capital served as BookMyShow's exclusive financial adviser, with Trilegal providing legal counsel.
This investment marks KKR's latest private equity foray into India, adding BookMyShow to its expanding global portfolio of media and entertainment assets. It signifies a strong commitment to tapping into India's dynamic digital and entertainment markets.
