Mehli K. Mistry, a prominent figure and long-time associate of industrialist Ratan Tata, has announced his decision not to seek re-election as a trustee of the Tata Medical Centre Trust. His tenure is set to conclude on September 30, 2026.
This latest move signifies Mistry's sixth departure from various organizations associated with the Tata Group. The decision was formally communicated in an email dated September 15 to Arun Pattatheyil, CEO of the Tata Medical Centre, and copied to Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and other trustees.
A Series of Departures
Mistry's gradual withdrawal from Tata-linked entities commenced in October 2025. This followed the non-approval of his reappointment as a trustee to both the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, pivotal philanthropic arms of the group.
Initially, Mistry had filed a pre-emptive caveat with the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner, seeking a hearing before any revisions to the trustee list. However, he subsequently withdrew this caveat, stating his desire to prevent the trusts from being embroiled in controversy.
Further Exits from Key Tata Entities
The pattern of departures continued after the execution of Ratan Tata’s will. Mistry stepped down as a trustee from both the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust and the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation. In July 2026, he also resigned as a director of RNT Associates Private Limited, an investment firm established by Ratan Tata to manage personal holdings valued at over ₹1,000 crore.
With his upcoming exit from the Tata Medical Centre Trust, Mistry's primary remaining association within the Tata philanthropic ecosystem will be with the Tata Education and Development Trust.
