Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) has officially announced the appointment of Ramesh Varakhedkar as its Chief Business Officer (CBO). Varakhedkar, who assumed his role as Key Management Personnel on September 28, 2026, is set to play a pivotal part in the exchange's ongoing expansion and strategic initiatives.
Extensive Experience in Financial Markets
Varakhedkar brings a wealth of experience, boasting over three decades in the financial and capital markets space. His extensive background spans various facets of the industry, making him a valuable addition to the MCX leadership team. Academically, he is well-qualified, having completed the Accelerated General Management Programme from IIM Ahmedabad, an Executive Programme in Applied Finance from IM Calcutta, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing and Sales. He also holds a Bachelor's degree in Science.
Previous Leadership Roles
Before joining MCX, Varakhedkar held significant positions at several prominent financial institutions. Most recently, he served as the Head of Commodities Business at ICICI Securities Ltd. His career trajectory also includes stints at Karvy Stock Broking Ltd, Metropolitan Stock Exchange Ltd, Citibank, and ICICI Bank, where he honed his expertise across diverse market operations and business development.
MCX's Strategic Growth and Market Expansion
The appointment of Ramesh Varakhedkar aligns with MCX's broader strategy to enhance and expand its commodity-market offerings. The exchange has been actively introducing and diversifying its contracts, particularly in key commodities such as natural gas and crude oil options, aimed at increasing investor participation and market depth.
Market analysts are optimistic about MCX's future growth trajectory. A recent report from Macquarie projected a robust 19% compound annual growth rate in the exchange's revenue through FY30. This anticipated growth is largely attributed to rising investor engagement and the continuous introduction of innovative commodity products, a domain where Varakhedkar's leadership is expected to contribute significantly.
