Maruti Suzuki has solidified its position as India's dominant electric vehicle (EV) exporter, accounting for a remarkable 97% of the country's total EV exports during the first quarter (April-June) of FY2026-27. The automaker shipped 15,210 electric passenger vehicles, contributing significantly to India's overall export figure of 15,641 units for the period.
This represents an astounding nearly 14-fold increase compared to the 1,122 units exported in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. The surge underscores India's rapidly growing prominence as a global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.
e-Vitara Leads Global Demand
The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara electric SUV has been the primary catalyst for this export boom. Since its international debut, the e-Vitara has quickly become one of India's fastest-growing export models, reaching 47 countries worldwide.
Key international markets for the e-Vitara include the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, and South Africa, alongside various other European destinations. This widespread acceptance highlights the increasing global demand for India-built electric vehicles, supported by enhanced manufacturing quality and competitive pricing.
India's Expanding Role in Global EV Production
The substantial growth in Maruti Suzuki EV exports also signifies India's increasing strategic importance within Suzuki Motor Corporation's global manufacturing network. Industry analysts note that this rapid acceleration in overseas shipments has seen the April-June quarter alone surpass more than half of India's total EV exports recorded during the entire previous financial year.
Higher export volumes are expected to foster improved economies of scale for manufacturers, further strengthening India's standing as a formidable global automotive production base. While Maruti Suzuki currently holds a commanding lead in EV exports, other Indian automakers are also actively preparing to expand their international footprint.
Companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are reportedly developing plans to boost exports of their electric vehicle offerings to right-hand-drive markets across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Pacific in the coming years. This anticipated diversification promises to broaden India's overall EV export portfolio.
Beyond electric vehicles, Maruti Suzuki also demonstrated strong performance in broader passenger vehicle exports, shipping 123,330 units during the first quarter. This secured a record 55.5% share of India's total passenger vehicle exports, reaffirming its position as the country's largest overall automobile exporter.
