· · 2 min read

Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra announced a ₹15,000 crore investment in Nagpur over 10 years, citing India's emergence as a global manufacturing hub. He noted that approximately one-quarter of all iPhones are now produced in the country.

Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra recently highlighted India's rapidly expanding role in global manufacturing, revealing that nearly one in every four iPhones is now produced within the country. Speaking at the company's Annual General Meeting (AGM), Mahindra underscored India's growing importance amidst a shifting global economic landscape.

Mahindra explained that the global economy is moving away from traditional globalization towards more selective, strategic partnerships. This shift, he argued, creates significant opportunities for nations that can offer substantial scale, political stability, robust manufacturing capabilities, and a skilled talent pool. India, with its large domestic market, skilled workforce, and strategic flexibility, is increasingly positioned as a preferred destination for international manufacturers.

India as a Global Manufacturing Hub

The statistic regarding iPhone production serves as a powerful indicator of India's evolving role. "Approximately a quarter of all iPhones are manufactured in India. That is not just a statistic. It tells us something about how India's role in global manufacturing is changing," Mahindra stated. He emphasized that in an uncertain world, India is not merely coping but is actively gaining global relevance as companies seek to diversify their manufacturing bases and reconfigure complex supply chains.

Major Investment in Nagpur

In a strong vote of confidence for India's manufacturing future, Mahindra also announced a substantial investment plan. The Mahindra Group intends to invest ₹15,000 crore (approximately $1.8 billion USD) in Nagpur over the next decade. This commitment represents one of the company's largest prospective investments, further cementing India's position in critical global supply chains.

Drawing a parallel, Mahindra noted that the Mahindra Group itself has benefited from these changing global dynamics, experiencing one of its strongest years. The company is actively stepping up its investments in innovation and expanding its manufacturing footprint, aligning with the broader national trajectory towards becoming a preeminent global manufacturing powerhouse.
