In a striking social experiment, Parag Shah, a BJP MLA representing Mumbai’s Ghatkopar East constituency and one of Maharashtra's wealthiest legislators, spent an entire day disguised as a beggar. Shah, who declared assets of approximately ₹3,383 crore in his 2024 election affidavit, shed his usual security, luxury vehicles, and designer clothes to experience life from a vastly different perspective.
A Guru's Recommendation, a Legislator's Journey
The unusual endeavor was undertaken at the recommendation of a Jain guru, who suggested the experiment to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the city's less fortunate. Shah walked through bustling streets, rode crowded local trains, and sought alms from passersby.
“All the respect and honour, the people who line up to meet you -- the same people, when I go to them, become taller than me. So, that is the reality of life,” Shah reflected after the experience, highlighting the stark contrast in how he was perceived.
Unexpected Acts of Kindness
During his time on the streets, Shah encountered moments of unexpected generosity. He recounted how a samosa vendor, unaware of his true identity, offered him a free samosa with a smile. “The man was very small, a poor hawker, but without making a face even once, he gave me the samosa,” Shah shared. Another individual gave him ₹20, telling him to “Go baba, eat food.”
These small acts of kindness, he noted, demonstrated that compassion still exists amidst the anonymity of urban life, even when the recipient's true status is unknown.
Impact on Policy and Perspective
Shah, an active figure in the real estate sector and former corporator of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, fully immersed himself in the role, eating the food he received and sitting by the roadside. After concluding the experiment, he returned to some of the same locations without his disguise to observe how people reacted differently when they knew his identity.
He later shared his profound experience with his guru and others, emphasizing that this firsthand understanding would significantly inform his approach to policy discussions concerning social welfare, housing, and public services. The experiment served as a powerful reminder of the human element often overlooked in political discourse.
