L&T Shares Gain After Renewables Unit Secures Major Middle East Battery Storage Order

· · 2 min read

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) shares increased after its renewables division secured a major order for three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the Middle East. These facilities will provide a collective six gigawatt-hours of storage capacity.

Shares of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) saw an uptick on Tuesday following a significant announcement from its renewables business. The company has secured a major order to develop three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects for a client in the Middle East, marking a notable expansion in its clean energy portfolio.

These three BESS facilities are designed to collectively provide a substantial six gigawatt-hours (GWh) of storage capacity. The comprehensive order encompasses not only the development of the battery storage infrastructure but also the necessary grid interconnections, including pooling substations and extensive underground cabling.

Advanced Storage for Grid Stability

Each of the three projects will incorporate a four-hour BESS, enabling them to store and dispatch energy efficiently to bolster grid stability and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy sources. This capability is crucial for managing the intermittency often associated with solar and wind power generation.

L&T confirmed to stock exchanges that these battery storage systems will support energy shifting. This allows surplus clean energy generated during periods of low demand or high production to be stored and subsequently released during peak demand hours, optimizing energy distribution and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Innovative Liquid Cooling Technology

A key technological feature of the BESS solution is the integration of liquid cooling. According to L&T, this advanced cooling system will enhance power density, improve safety standards, and extend the operational life of the battery units. Such innovations are critical for the long-term viability and efficiency of large-scale energy storage projects.

The projects are expected to play a vital role in modernizing the energy grid and accelerating renewable energy adoption across the Middle East region. While L&T classifies orders between Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 10,000 crore as 'Major', the exact financial value of this particular contract was not disclosed in the company's filing.

Larsen & Toubro is a diversified multinational conglomerate known for its extensive involvement in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects, high-tech manufacturing, and various products and services across multiple global geographies.
