L&T Secures Rs 5,000 Crore ONGC Contract for West Coast Offshore Energy Projects

· · 3 min read

Larsen & Toubro's energy division has secured a 'large' order, valued up to Rs 5,000 crore, from ONGC. The contract involves EPCIC services for two key offshore oil and gas development projects off India's west coast, aiming to boost production.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on Wednesday that its energy hydrocarbon offshore business has secured a significant order from the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Valued at up to Rs 5,000 crore, this 'large' contract (as classified by L&T, denoting orders between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 5,000 crore) is for additional development projects situated off India's western coastline.

The contract has been awarded to L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Offshore (LTEH Offshore) and encompasses the Additional Development of Ratna-I (ADR-I) and NLM-14 projects. The extensive scope of work includes engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) of new offshore infrastructure, alongside modifications to existing facilities. This will involve the creation of three new well-head platforms, one riser platform, multiple sections of subsea pipelines and cables, and crucial brownfield modifications to operational offshore installations.

Boosting India's Offshore Production

These projects are strategically designed to support increased production and the ongoing development of ONGC's vital offshore assets in the region. The blend of new infrastructure and upgrades to existing operational facilities necessitates a complex integration of engineering and construction activities across both greenfield (new) and brownfield (existing) sites.

Parthasarathi Chatterjee, Senior Vice President and Head of L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Offshore, emphasized the importance of these initiatives. “The ADR-I and NLM-14 developments are significant additions to India's offshore energy infrastructure and demonstrate the continued investment in enhancing production from established offshore assets,” Chatterjee stated. He further noted that the projects combine new offshore facilities with modifications to operating fields, demanding intricate engineering integration and execution across offshore construction, subsea infrastructure, and facility upgrades.

L&T's Role and Market Impact

LTEH Offshore is well-regarded for providing integrated EPCIC solutions within the offshore oil and gas industry, boasting over four decades of experience. Its capabilities span fixed offshore platforms, subsea pipelines and structures, brownfield upgrades, and decommissioning projects, making it a key player in the sector.

This latest contract underscores ONGC's sustained commitment to investing in its offshore assets to maintain and enhance domestic oil and gas production. India’s western offshore basin remains a critical production region for the state-run explorer, with ongoing investments aimed at improving output from established fields and expanding supporting infrastructure.

For L&T, the order significantly strengthens its presence in India’s offshore hydrocarbon engineering and construction segment, substantially adding to its order pipeline within the energy sector. The contract also highlights continued spending on offshore infrastructure, even as energy companies navigate evolving global market conditions and the broader transition towards cleaner energy sources.
