LPG Subsidy Scam: Beware of Fake KYC Messages and Protect Your Bank Account

· · 3 min read

Cybercriminals are targeting Bharat Gas, Indane, and HP Gas users with fraudulent messages about LPG subsidy blocks. These scams aim to trick consumers into sharing sensitive financial information, potentially draining their bank accounts. Learn how to protect yourself.

A new wave of cybercrime is sweeping across India, specifically targeting users of major LPG providers like Bharat Gas, Indane, and HP Gas. Consumers are receiving alarming messages claiming their LPG subsidy will be blocked or their gas connection disconnected if they don't immediately update their Know Your Customer (KYC) details. These messages are a sophisticated phishing scam designed to steal personal financial information.

How the LPG Subsidy Scam Works

The scam typically begins with an SMS or WhatsApp message stating, "Your LPG cylinder subsidy will be blocked," "Complete your LPG cylinder KYC immediately," or "LPG cylinder connection may get disconnected. Click here." These messages contain a link that directs users to a fake website, meticulously designed to mimic official oil marketing company portals.

Once on these fraudulent sites, victims are prompted to enter highly sensitive personal information, including their Aadhaar number, bank account details, debit/credit card information, and crucially, the One-Time Password (OTP) received on their phone. Providing these details to the scammers can lead to immediate and significant financial loss.

Official Stance: Oil Companies Never Ask for OTPs

It is important for consumers to understand that while oil marketing companies may occasionally require verification processes, they NEVER ask customers to share OTPs, card details, or banking passwords over calls, text messages, or messaging applications. Any such request should be treated as a red flag.

What to Do if You've Clicked a Suspicious Link

If you have unfortunately clicked on a fraudulent link and shared sensitive information, immediate action is crucial:

  • Contact Your Bank: Reach out to your bank immediately to block any vulnerable accounts or cards.
  • Change Passwords: Change all your online passwords, especially those linked to banking and financial services.
  • Report the Incident: File a report with your local police or through the national cybercrime reporting portal.
  • Inform Your LPG Distributor: Notify your specific LPG distributor about the incident.

Stay Vigilant: Key Warning Signs

Always be suspicious of messages that demand immediate action, especially those threatening to block services or subsidies. Be wary of any unknown links sent via SMS or WhatsApp, and never share OTPs, ATM PINs, or banking credentials with anyone claiming to be from a gas agency or any other official entity.

Protecting your financial security starts with vigilance and knowing the tactics cybercriminals employ. Stay informed and share this crucial information with friends and family to help prevent others from falling victim to these scams.
