The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has unveiled a new face authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) designed to significantly simplify Aadhaar access for Indians residing or traveling overseas. This strategic launch aims to address existing geofencing limitations, allowing partner institutions to process Aadhaar authentications locally.
Easing Aadhaar Access for Overseas Indians
UIDAI Chairman Neelkanth Mishra announced the groundbreaking SDK on September 9, 2026, at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai. The new technology empowers banks and businesses to conduct Aadhaar authentications directly on their own servers, rather than routing every request through UIDAI's central systems. This localized approach is particularly beneficial for non-resident Indians (NRIs) who have historically faced challenges due to geographical restrictions on Aadhaar services.
Mishra highlighted that the primary challenge with removing geofencing outright is the increased vulnerability it creates for critical infrastructure like Aadhaar, which faces numerous daily cyber threats. By shifting the authentication process to partner institutions' local servers, the SDK maintains robust security while offering greater flexibility.
Bolstering Security and Scalability
The new model places the responsibility for securing the local authentication process on the partner institution, thereby reducing the exposure of UIDAI’s central infrastructure. This distributed security mechanism is crucial as Aadhaar authentication volumes continue to surge, rising from approximately 7 crore daily transactions a few years ago to roughly 10 crore currently. UIDAI is proactively preparing its systems to manage an anticipated 25 to 30 crore authentications per day as adoption expands.
Currently, over 600 entities utilize the Aadhaar platform, and the official Aadhaar app is nearing 6 crore downloads. Mishra cited the example of the Telangana police, which increasingly requires Aadhaar app-based verification for various processes, further driving app adoption.
UIDAI's Vision for Invisible Infrastructure
Mishra articulated UIDAI's long-term vision, stating, "Aadhaar is only a database." He emphasized that the authority's core objective is to securely manage the identity data of 1.44 billion people and provide it in a safe and trusted manner. "We would like to become the infrastructure that no one knows," he added, underscoring a commitment to seamless, background operation.
Jitendra Gupta, Founder and CEO of Jupiter, lauded Aadhaar as "one of the biggest boons for the fintech industry." He noted its instrumental role in reducing friction during customer onboarding and fostering digital-first customer experiences. The launch of this new SDK represents another significant stride in expanding Aadhaar-based authentication, prioritizing both security and accessibility.
