Why Are Fuel Prices Rising?

The ongoing increases in fuel prices are primarily attributed to a surge in global energy costs. This escalation follows significant geopolitical events, including a US-Israel attack on Iran on February 28 and Tehran's subsequent retaliation, which led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption severely impacted global energy supply chains, pushing up crude oil and natural gas prices.

Oil companies have passed on these higher global costs to consumers to ease margin pressures, which had been accumulating. The government had previously delayed price revisions, implementing these hikes approximately 16 days after the conclusion of Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

Concerns about fuel availability and rising costs have led to discussions at the highest levels. Prime Minister Modi has called for a shift towards conventional energy sources, suggesting biogas as an alternative to LPG for cooking. India historically sourced over 40 percent of its crude oil and about 90 percent of its LPG from the Middle East via the Strait of Hormuz, making it particularly vulnerable to disruptions in the region.

Opposition members have voiced strong concerns regarding reported shortages of petrol and LPG, criticizing the Oil Ministry for not providing official data and for failing to implement corrective measures earlier, despite indications of prolonged conflict in West Asia. Officials, however, state that the country has crude oil stocks sufficient for 78 days and are working to mitigate shortages, though uncertainty persists regarding the conflict's resolution.
