Fuel prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) remained unchanged across major Indian cities on August 3, 2026, marking over a month of stable rates. However, concerns about future supply and pricing have escalated following renewed military actions by the United States against Iran, which has heightened fears of potential disruptions to global energy supplies.
The escalating tensions have impacted regional security, leading to low vessel crossings along critical shipping routes. This situation has prompted India, one of the world's largest energy consumers, to accelerate its efforts to diversify its energy import sources.
India's Strategic Shift in LPG Sourcing
To mitigate reliance on Middle Eastern suppliers and safeguard against future supply disruptions, India aims to procure up to a quarter of its LPG imports from the United States by 2027. This strategic move is also expected to support New Delhi's ambitions for a comprehensive trade deal with Washington.
This diversification push follows a severe LPG shortage earlier this year, triggered by the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which significantly disrupted supplies. During that crisis, the Indian government implemented emergency measures, diverting petrochemical feedstocks from industrial use to households, where LPG is a primary cooking fuel. In 2025, India sourced approximately 90 percent of its 21.85 million metric tonnes of LPG imports from the Middle East, with imports accounting for about 66 percent of the country's total LPG consumption.
