India's energy consumers are navigating a mixed landscape of fuel prices as of June 3, 2026. While commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) have seen recent price increases, the cost of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder remains stable, providing some relief to households.
Commercial LPG and CNG Prices See Uptick
The beginning of June brought a fresh hike for commercial LPG cylinders. In Delhi, the price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder rose by ₹42, while Kolkata witnessed an increase of ₹53.5. Similarly, a 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinder in Delhi is now priced at ₹821.5, up by ₹11. These adjustments follow a previous revision in mid-May.
CNG rates have also been on an upward trajectory. A ₹2 per kg increase on May 26 marked the fourth such hike since May 15, accumulating to a total rise of ₹6 per kg. In Delhi, CNG now costs ₹83.09 per kg, reflecting ongoing pressures on fuel suppliers.
Domestic LPG Prices Hold Steady
In contrast to the commercial segment, the price for a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has remained unchanged since early March 2026, when it last saw a ₹60 increase. This stability is largely attributed to government efforts to shield household consumers from the volatility of global energy markets, despite a significant rise in international benchmark prices for LPG.
For beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme, the government continues to provide a ₹300 per cylinder direct benefit transfer subsidy, making the effective price considerably lower than the actual supply cost, which is estimated around ₹1,200 per cylinder.
Global Factors Drive Price Volatility
The recent fuel price adjustments are a direct consequence of escalating international energy costs and geopolitical events. A major factor cited is the surge in global prices following a US-Israel attack on Iran on February 28 and Tehran's subsequent retaliation, which led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. India heavily relies on the Middle East for over 40% of its crude oil imports and approximately 90% of its LPG, much of which transits through this critical maritime chokepoint.
State-owned oil marketing companies review prices monthly, with final rates varying across states due to local taxes like VAT. Despite record highs for commercial LPG, the government emphasizes that India's household LPG rates remain among the lowest in the region, reflecting its commitment to consumer protection.
