Fuel consumers in Lakshadweep, along with the rest of India, are facing significantly higher prices at the pump as oil marketing companies (OMCs) implemented a nationwide hike of ₹3 per litre for both petrol and diesel. The new rates, effective May 15, 2026, push the price of petrol in Lakshadweep to ₹103.51 per litre and diesel to ₹98.54 per litre.
First Hike in Over a Year
This revision marks the first increase in fuel prices since March 21, 2025, ending a prolonged period where rates were held steady. The pause in price adjustments was largely attributed to state assembly elections, with the government typically avoiding such hikes during electoral periods to prevent voter backlash.
Reasons Behind the Surge
The upward revision comes as OMCs face mounting pressure from several factors:
- Elevated Global Crude Prices: International crude oil prices have remained high due to disruptions in West Asian shipping routes and ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for India's oil imports.
- Weaker Rupee: The depreciation of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar increases the cost of importing crude oil, further squeezing the margins of state-owned OMCs like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum.
- Under-Recoveries: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas previously indicated substantial under-recoveries for OMCs, absorbing an estimated ₹26 per litre on petrol and ₹81.90 per litre on diesel at current international crude prices.
Impact on Consumers and Economy
Experts anticipate that these higher fuel prices will lead to increased freight and logistics costs, subsequently affecting prices across various industries and potentially contributing to broader inflationary pressures. India, importing the majority of its crude oil requirements, remains highly susceptible to global price fluctuations and currency movements.
The final retail price of fuel varies by city and region due to differing local taxes, transportation costs, and demand-supply dynamics, which contribute significantly to the overall cost consumers pay.
