Kotak Mahindra Bank's New CEO Anup Saha Outlines 2027 Strategic Focus

· · 2 min read

Incoming Kotak Mahindra Bank MD & CEO Anup Kumar Saha, effective January 1, 2027, has detailed the bank's strategic priorities, emphasizing affluent banking, digital channels like Kotak 811, and payments. The bank also reported a 29% profit increase for the July-September quarter.

Kotak Mahindra Bank is poised for a strategic shift with Anup Kumar Saha taking the reins as Managing Director and CEO, effective January 1, 2027. Saha, who currently oversees retail banking, data analytics, and marketing, has outlined a clear vision for the bank's future, focusing on key growth segments and enhanced execution.

Strategic Pillars for Future Growth

Saha highlighted several core areas that will drive the bank's strategy moving forward:

  • Affluent and Private Banking: Continuing to serve and expand its base of affluent customers remains a top priority.
  • Digital Channels: The bank will double down on its digital-first approach, leveraging platforms like Kotak 811 to reach a broader mass-market consumer base across India.
  • Payments Ecosystem: Recognizing the significant potential in the payments sector, especially with the impending levy of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI, Kotak Mahindra Bank aims to capitalize on its existing strong presence and customer engagement in digital transactions.
  • Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Banking: Integrating agriculture, business, and SME operations under a single vertical is designed to foster stronger customer relationships and tap into this vital economic segment.

Saha stressed a commitment to refining the bank's execution capabilities to achieve these strategic goals, emphasizing a focus on operational excellence.

Strong Financial Performance and Asset Quality

Kotak Mahindra Bank recently reported robust financial results for the July-September quarter. The standalone net profit surged by 29% year-on-year, reaching Rs 4,212 crore. Net interest income (NII) also saw a healthy increase of 16%, totaling Rs 8,459 crore for the quarter.

Despite these gains, the Net Interest Margin (NIM) moderated slightly to 4.31% from 4.54%, primarily influenced by the mobilization of FCNR(B) deposits. The bank raised Rs 55,344 crore through these deposits under a special concessional swap window. Group CFO Devang Gheewalla indicated that as these funds are deployed into higher-yielding customer assets, NIMs are expected to improve in subsequent quarters, further bolstered by the repricing of repo-linked advances.

Asset quality showed continued improvement, with gross Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) declining to 1.04% as of September 30, 2026, down from 1.39% a year prior. Net NPAs also reduced to 0.24% from 0.32% over the same period. This positive trend is attributed to revamped risk underwriting models and enhanced collections capabilities implemented over the past two years.

While the bank remains watchful of potential stress in the agriculture sector following a weak monsoon, officials have not yet observed any significant signs of concern.
