IndiGo, India's largest airline, has announced a significant operational shift, moving 12 daily international departures from Mumbai's existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). This phased transition is set to commence in February 2027 and conclude by July 2027.
Major International Route Relocation
The move involves 11 existing international destinations: Bahrain, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Madinah, Kuwait, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Muscat, Dhaka, and Jakarta. Additionally, IndiGo will introduce a new daily flight to Kathmandu from Navi Mumbai, bringing the total number of international routes shifted to 12.
This strategic decision is a joint effort between IndiGo and Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), the operator of both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports. The transition is currently in the final stages of operational planning, with exact dates for individual flight shifts to be announced following necessary approvals and coordination.
Supporting Mumbai's Dual-Airport System
The relocation is a crucial part of developing a dual-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. While NMIA will accommodate expanding domestic and international traffic, CSMIA will continue its operations, with the shift also creating additional capacity at the existing airport. This newfound capacity at CSMIA will allow IndiGo to introduce new international services across Asia, Africa, and Europe in 2027, utilizing its growing fleet of Airbus A320, A321, and the longer-range A321XLR aircraft.
A key factor driving this change is the impending redevelopment of Terminal 1 at CSMIA, which will necessitate reductions in airport capacity by 2030. IndiGo's move to Navi Mumbai will contribute to these reductions, easing the pressure on the existing infrastructure.
Passenger Information and Connectivity
IndiGo will also shift domestic services necessary to support its international operations at Navi Mumbai. This will enable passengers traveling between domestic and international destinations on IndiGo to make connections seamlessly through NMIA, avoiding transfers between Mumbai's two airports.
Passengers are advised to carefully check their departure and arrival airports when booking tickets, especially for connecting journeys, as the changes will be implemented incrementally rather than all at once. The airline and airport operator are coordinating infrastructure and operational arrangements to ensure smooth transitions and connections.
