India's first indigenous hydrogen-powered train has achieved a significant milestone, successfully completing over 1,200 kilometers of trial runs. This innovative locomotive has saved more than 3,200 litres of diesel during its operations, according to the Railway Ministry, marking a crucial step towards cleaner and more efficient rail transport across the nation.

The hydrogen train commenced its trial phase after being flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17 from Jind railway station in Haryana. It has since operated smoothly on the Jind-Sonipat route. As of July 25, the train's early trial performance demonstrated strong results in reducing fossil fuel consumption, providing an encouraging outlook for the future deployment of hydrogen-based rail technology in India.
How Hydrogen Power Works
Unlike traditional diesel locomotives, the hydrogen train generates its own electricity onboard. This process involves a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, which powers the train without the need for external electricity lines. The sole byproduct of this reaction is water vapor, making it an environmentally friendly alternative. The train's propulsion system is further supported by advanced lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders, positioning it as a leading clean mobility project within Indian Railways.
Indigenous Technological Achievement
This hydrogen train is a testament to India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, having been developed entirely as an indigenous project by Indian Railways. The train comprises 10 passenger coaches and two hydrogen driving power cars, collectively producing 2,400 kW of power. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lauded the project as a landmark achievement, emphasizing that the entire propulsion technology was developed within India.
