Despite concerns over fuel supply disruptions, the prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have held steady across major Indian cities today, August 2, 2026. Rates for all three fuels have remained unchanged for over a month, offering some relief to consumers.
However, underlying anxieties regarding fuel availability have intensified following renewed military actions by the United States against Iran. These escalating tensions have sparked fears of fresh supply disruptions, particularly impacting vessel crossings along critical shipping routes in the Middle East.
India's Strategic Shift in LPG Imports
In response to these geopolitical challenges and a previous severe LPG shortage earlier this year, India is actively pursuing a strategy to diversify its energy sources. The nation plans to procure up to 25 percent of its liquefied petroleum gas imports from the United States by 2027. This move is designed to reduce India's significant reliance on Middle Eastern suppliers, which accounted for approximately 90 percent of its 21.85 million metric tonnes of LPG imports in 2025. Diversifying imports is also expected to bolster New Delhi's efforts to secure a trade deal with Washington.
The past shortage, triggered by the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, necessitated emergency measures, including diverting petrochemical feedstocks from industrial use to households for cooking fuel. India, as the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, sees this diversification as crucial for its energy security, especially as imports constitute about 66 percent of its total LPG consumption.
