India's First Bullet Train, B28, Set for 2027 Launch on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Route

· · 3 min read

India's first indigenous bullet train, the B28, is nearing completion at BEML's Bengaluru facility. Designed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, it targets 249 kmph operational speed and 557 passenger capacity, with trials starting mid-2027.

India is on the cusp of a new era in high-speed rail, as the nation's first indigenously manufactured bullet train, the B28, progresses rapidly towards its operational debut. Being developed at BEML's ADITYA facility in Bengaluru, the B28 trainset is designed to revolutionize travel along the 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.

Speed, Capacity, and Design

The B28, also known as the Bharat-made bullet trainset, is an eight-coach configuration, stretching approximately 202 meters in length. It boasts a design and test speed of 280 kilometers per hour, with a planned operational speed of 249 kmph. The train is engineered to carry 557 passengers, including dedicated spaces for two Divyangjan (Persons with Reduced Mobility) passengers.

Seating arrangements include seven standard-class coaches featuring a comfortable 3x2 layout, alongside one executive-class coach with a more spacious 2x2 configuration. Its aerodynamic design is crucial for high-speed performance and energy efficiency.

Passenger Comfort and Accessibility

Passenger experience is central to the B28's design. The trainsets will incorporate a modern HVAC system for optimal cabin temperature and humidity control, coupled with advanced noise-reduction measures to ensure a smooth and quiet journey. Travelers will benefit from:

  • LCD information displays in English, Hindi, and regional languages.
  • Automated announcements for timely updates.
  • Wi-Fi-based infotainment systems preloaded with entertainment content.
  • Ergonomic seating, wide panoramic windows, and energy-efficient LED lighting.
  • Convenient overhead luggage racks and charging points.
  • Eco-friendly bio-digester toilets.
  • Emergency talk-back units in passenger cabins and vestibules for direct communication with staff.

Accessibility features are integrated throughout, offering level boarding, retractable footsteps, wheelchair-friendly doors, dedicated seating, and accessible toilets for Divyangjan passengers, complemented by Braille-enabled signage.

Advanced Technology and Energy Efficiency

Each end of the train is equipped with a driver’s cab featuring an Intelligent On-Board Control System, ensuring precise and safe operation. The B28 will utilize a 25 kV, 50 Hz single-phase AC traction system supplied via a heavy compound catenary. A key energy-saving feature is its regenerative braking system, which recovers energy during deceleration, significantly enhancing overall energy efficiency.

Project Timeline and Future Plans

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the B28's progress, indicating that the first train could be on tracks by April-May 2027. The indigenous trainset is expected to roll out from BEML's Bengaluru facility by the end of 2026 or early 2027. Trials are slated to commence on the 97-kilometer Surat-Vapi section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor by May-June 2027, with commercial services targeted for August 2027.

BEML is initially constructing two eight-car trainsets for trials. The Ministry of Railways has also placed a substantial ₹5,400-crore order with BEML, securing the wider fleet for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route and paving the way for future high-speed rail expansion in India.
