India's E20 Petrol Rollout Safe, Backed by Trials, Government Assures Lok Sabha

The Indian government confirms its E20 petrol rollout is safe, citing rigorous scientific studies and extensive field trials. Millions of vehicles running on E20 have shown no widespread engine failures or abnormal wear, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed the Lok Sabha.

New Delhi – The Indian government has affirmed that the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, a blend containing 20% ethanol, is robustly supported by extensive scientific studies and real-world trials. Concerns regarding vehicle performance and engine longevity under the ethanol blending program lack empirical basis, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed the Lok Sabha today.

Shri Suresh Gopi, Minister of State, highlighted in a written reply that the implementation of E20 petrol is a result of rigorous scientific validation, comprehensive field testing, and collaborative consultations with multiple stakeholders across the automotive and energy sectors.

Rigorous Testing and Stakeholder Collaboration

The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme was meticulously structured through a consultative framework involving key institutions. This included NITI Aayog, major automobile manufacturers, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP).

Extensive laboratory research and field trials were conducted to evaluate a broad spectrum of parameters. These assessments covered crucial aspects such as engine durability, startability, drivability, material compatibility, corrosion resistance, and overall fuel efficiency. The findings from these controlled environments consistently supported the viability and safety of higher ethanol blends.

Real-World Performance and Industry Backing

The government's assurances are further reinforced by real-world tracking data from India's vast vehicle fleet. With approximately 8 crore vehicles, predominantly petrol-driven, visiting fuel stations daily, higher ethanol blends have become an integral part of routine usage. E15+ petrol has been actively deployed for over three and a half years, while E19-E20 blends have been widely distributed for more than two and a half years.

Across more than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol cars currently operating on these blends, service networks have reported no verified instances of widespread engine failure or vehicle breakdown directly attributable to ethanol. Notably, even legacy vehicles not specifically certified for E20 have shown no abnormal wear and tear or operational variations.

OEMs Confirm No Ethanol-Related Damage

Industry service records provide concrete evidence of the blend's compatibility. A leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) serviced 2.84 crore vehicles in FY 2025-26, including nearly 1.5 crore non-E20 certified models, and reported zero E20-induced corrosion, accelerated component wear, or reduction in lifespan. Similar tracking data from another major OEM, covering 1.4 crore vehicles operated on E20 over an extended period, likewise confirmed no ethanol-related damage.

Leading two-wheeler manufacturers have corroborated these field observations. Furthermore, automobile manufacturers continue to honor full warranty obligations for vehicles utilizing E20 fuel, underscoring their confidence in its safety and performance.

Beyond Compatibility: Operational Gains

Beyond ensuring mechanical compatibility, scientific assessments by SIAM and ARAI indicate tangible operational advantages with E20 petrol. Ethanol's inherently higher octane rating is beneficial for modern high-compression engines, contributing to improved performance. Additionally, its higher heat of vaporisation enhances combustion efficiency, leading to better overall acceleration and ride quality, while simultaneously contributing to lower carbon emissions.
