India's Car Sales Soar Post-GST 2.0: Automakers Boost Production

· · 3 min read

India's passenger vehicle market is experiencing a significant boom following the GST 2.0 reforms implemented in September 2025. Automakers like Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are expanding capacity as monthly wholesales consistently hit 4 lakh units, driven by increased affordability.

The implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST 2.0) reforms on September 22, 2025, has ignited an unprecedented boom in India's automotive sector, leading to a surge in vehicle demand and affordability. This significant policy change has prompted major Indian automakers to accelerate their capacity expansion plans to keep pace with the robust growth.

GST 2.0 Drives Record Monthly Sales

Since the introduction of GST 2.0, monthly wholesale figures for passenger vehicles have consistently reached approximately 4 lakh units, establishing a new benchmark for the industry. Tarun Garg, MD and CEO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd., highlighted this trend, emphasizing the sector's strong growth trajectory. The reforms simplified and reduced standard tax rates for a large segment of automotive sales from 28% to 18%, directly enhancing vehicle affordability for consumers.

Automakers Expand Capacity to Meet Demand

The period from September 2025 to March 2026 saw the passenger vehicle industry record over 15% year-on-year growth. This momentum further accelerated to over 29% growth between April and August FY27, underscoring the profound impact of the tax rationalization.

Hyundai Motor India is actively deepening its manufacturing footprint, notably through the acquisition of General Motors’ Talegaon plant in Pune, aimed at boosting production capabilities.

Similarly, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the nation's leading car manufacturer, has witnessed a remarkable increase in demand for its entry-segment vehicles, growing by more than 96% since the GST reforms. This surge reflects stronger consumer purchasing power, enabling more households to transition from two-wheelers to four-wheelers. For many first-time buyers, the reduced tax burden has made car ownership an achievable aspiration.

Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, noted that passenger vehicle sales for the company grew about 36% year-on-year during April-August 2026. He specifically praised the "landmark GST reform" for giving "fresh impetus to India’s growth journey," particularly highlighting the entry segment's impressive growth.

Wider Economic Impact and Investment

The heightened demand is not limited to passenger cars. Anish Shah, Group CEO and MD of Mahindra Group, confirmed that the company is investing in additional capacity across its diverse businesses. Shah described GST 2.0 as a critical milestone towards a simpler, more efficient, and growth-oriented tax regime for India.

Mahindra Group businesses have experienced significant positive effects, with SUVs growing 17%, and Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and tractors seeing a 20% increase since the GST rationalization. Mahindra Finance also reported improved vehicle affordability and demand, leading to higher loan disbursements and healthier repayment rates due to stronger customer cash flows.

Shah further elaborated that the impact extends beyond individual sectors, fostering improved competitiveness, supporting investment, and strengthening supply chains across manufacturing, financial services, real estate, hospitality, and technology sectors due to a simpler tax structure, lower transaction costs, and greater predictability. The group is making further investments to increase capacity across multiple businesses in response to this enhanced demand.
