India's Cabinet Approves ₹10,000 Crore SME Growth Fund for Global Competition

· · 2 min read

The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹10,000 crore SME Growth Fund. This initiative aims to provide long-term equity capital to small and medium enterprises, helping them expand and compete internationally.

The Indian Union Cabinet has given its assent to a significant ₹10,000 crore government commitment to establish an SME Growth Fund. This new fund is designed to inject crucial long-term equity capital into small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across India, fostering their growth and enabling them to compete effectively on the global stage.

Addressing an Equity Gap for Growing Businesses

Announced as part of the Union Budget 2026-27, the SME Growth Fund will make direct equity investments in SMEs that demonstrate viable business models and strong potential for scaling operations. The government has identified a structural gap in growth-stage equity funding, noting that most existing funds primarily target early-stage or micro-enterprises, leaving a void for established SMEs seeking to expand.

A substantial portion of the fund's allocation will be directed towards manufacturing-focused small and medium enterprises. Additionally, the initiative will prioritize investments in industrial clusters located within India's Tier-II and Tier-III cities, aiming to stimulate regional industrial development and local supply chains.

Patient Capital for Strategic Expansion

The government emphasizes that the fund will provide "patient growth equity capital" to high-potential SMEs at critical junctures in their development. This capital is expected to empower companies to:

  • Scale up their operations and production capacity.
  • Invest in advanced technology and modern manufacturing processes.
  • Expand into international markets and integrate into global value chains.
  • Undertake strategic investments, including acquisitions.

By supporting these manufacturing companies, the fund is anticipated to boost productivity, enhance export competitiveness, and generate quality employment opportunities nationwide.

Part of a Broader MSME Support Framework

The SME Growth Fund is an integral component of a wider set of measures outlined in the Union Budget 2026-27, all aimed at strengthening the entire Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) ecosystem. This comprehensive approach includes initiatives covering credit support, digitalization, ease of doing business, public procurement reforms, startup promotion, and production-linked incentive programs.

Ultimately, the government envisions the SME Growth Fund as a catalyst to "create champions, drive innovation-led industrialization," and contribute significantly to its ambitious Viksit Bharat @ 2047 vision for a developed India.
