Nepal's tourism sector is experiencing a significant uplift, with Indian tourist arrivals reaching a record high in May. The Himalayan nation welcomed 40,782 Indian visitors by air during the month, a figure unprecedented in the Nepal Tourism Board's records. This surge represents a substantial 32.66% increase compared to the same period last year, signalling a robust recovery in Nepal's largest source market for foreign tourists.
This remarkable growth is largely attributed to a combination of strategic policy adjustments, enhanced connectivity, and evolving travel preferences among Indian visitors. Nepal's tourism officials and industry stakeholders view this as a crucial opportunity to capture a larger share of India's rapidly expanding outbound travel market, which sees over 30 million Indians travelling abroad annually.
Key Factors Fueling the Tourism Boom
Several critical elements have converged to make Nepal an increasingly attractive destination for Indian travellers:
Eased Currency Restrictions and Digital Payments
A significant catalyst was the lifting of Nepal's decade-long ban on high-denomination Indian currency notes in January. This policy change, coupled with the widespread adoption of digital payments and QR code transactions across the country, has dramatically simplified financial transactions for Indian tourists. These measures have positioned Nepal as one of the most convenient overseas destinations for visitors from India.
Revival of Kailash Manasarovar Pilgrimage
The resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar pilgrimage route through Nepal last year, following a five-year suspension, has also played a pivotal role. The improved relations between India and China facilitated this revival. China has allocated a quota of 24,000 Indian pilgrims for the route via Nepal this year, an increase from 20,000 last year, though demand has already surpassed 40,000. Interest has particularly surged as many devotees seek to undertake the pilgrimage during the Chinese Year of the Horse, considered auspicious in Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
Affordable Airfares and Enhanced Convenience
Relatively affordable airfares have further contributed to the influx. Tour operators note that flights between New Delhi and Kathmandu are currently available for approximately Rs 15,000, making Nepal a competitive option compared to other international destinations. Beyond cost, Nepal offers unparalleled convenience for Indian travellers, including no visa requirements, acceptance of Indian currency and QR payments in many locations, and the ability for visitors to bring their own vehicles.
Future Outlook and Promotional Efforts
To sustain this momentum, Nepal's Embassy in New Delhi has launched a targeted initiative aimed at Indian digital audiences. This includes inviting Indian vloggers, YouTubers, podcasters, and content creators on familiarisation trips to prominent destinations such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan, leveraging their influence to promote Nepal's diverse attractions.
