Mumbai, India – India's interest-sensitive stocks, spanning banking, real estate, and automotive sectors, experienced a significant downturn in Tuesday's trading. The sell-off was triggered by August's inflation rate reaching an eight-month high, fueling expectations that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will opt for a rate hike in its upcoming monetary policy meetings.
Inflation Fuels Rate Hike Speculation
Following a 4.8 percent inflation print for August, financial analysts are revising their forecasts. HSBC now projects inflation to remain above 5 percent for approximately nine months. The firm anticipates the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will increase policy rates by 25 basis points in both its October and December meetings, potentially pushing the repo rate to 5.75 percent.
MOFSL analysts echoed this sentiment, stating, "With the RBI already undertaking aggressive liquidity absorption, we believe the policy reaction function is shifting toward pre-emptive tightening. An October rate hike is now a meaningful possibility, particularly if crude remains elevated." They foresee 75-100 basis points of cumulative rate hikes in the current cycle should a sustained oil shock scenario materialize.
Sector-Wide Impact on Rate-Sensitive Stocks
The prospect of higher interest rates directly impacts sectors reliant on borrowing and consumer credit, leading to widespread declines:
Real Estate Sector Takes a Hit
- The BSE Realty index declined significantly, driven by fears of reduced demand due to increased interest rates.
- Prestige Estates saw a 4.79 percent fall, closing at Rs 1,432.95.
- Godrej Properties and Oberoi Realty each dropped 4.2 percent.
- Other major realty players like Lodha, Aditya Birla Real Estate Ltd, Brigade, DLF, and Phoenix Mills registered declines of 2-4 percent.
Automobile Stocks Under Pressure
- Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland fell 4 percent.
- Two-wheeler makers Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor declined between 2-2.5 percent.
- Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Tata Motors Ltd (excluding PV shares), Eicher Motors, and Maruti Suzuki India also saw declines of up to 2 percent.
Banking Sector Sees Broad Red
- Most stocks on the BSE Bankex were in negative territory, with the exception of HDFC Bank, which saw a slight gain due to reports concerning CEO succession.
- AU SFB was the worst performer on the index, falling 2.38 percent to Rs 1,030.70.
- Major public and private lenders including State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda (BoB), ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and IndusInd Bank declined by up to 2.25 percent.
- Union Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank also experienced falls of at least 1 percent each.
The market's reaction underscores the sensitivity of these sectors to monetary policy shifts, with investors bracing for potential further tightening by the RBI in response to persistent inflationary pressures.
