Indian Railways is set to significantly upgrade food quality and hygiene standards aboard its premium trains by installing AI-powered CCTV cameras in pantry cars and base kitchens. This initiative, specifically targeting trains operating on the East Central Railway route, responds to long-standing passenger concerns regarding onboard catering.
Real-Time Monitoring for Better Food Safety
The new surveillance system will go beyond simple video recording. AI-enabled cameras are designed to actively detect deviations from cleanliness protocols and food preparation standards, triggering immediate alerts when issues are identified. This proactive approach is expected to ensure that food preparation, packaging, and supply processes adhere strictly to hygiene guidelines.
During a recent review of catering services at the IRCTC war room in New Delhi, Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar emphasized the critical need to bolster surveillance. The East Central Railway alone operates 73 pantry cars and train-side vending services, alongside 62 base kitchens, all of which will be integrated into this advanced monitoring network.
Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Proactive Alerts
The core innovation lies in the AI's ability to interpret footage. Instead of relying solely on human review, the system can automatically scan for pre-defined problems, such as unhygienic conditions or improper food handling. If dirt or any other cleanliness-related issue is detected, the AI will issue an alert, directing the monitoring team's attention to the specific area requiring intervention. This real-time feedback mechanism is crucial for prompt corrective action.
This technological leap aims to bring greater transparency and accountability to the railway's catering services, ultimately assuring passengers of safer and cleaner meals during their journeys. By closely watching the entire food chain from kitchen to plate, Indian Railways intends to restore confidence in its onboard dining experience.
