Indian Shares Fall: Auto, Banking, Realty Stocks Dip Ahead of RBI Policy Outcome

· · 2 min read

Indian stock markets saw declines in auto, banking, and real estate sectors today as investors awaited the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy outcome. Key indices like BSE Auto, Bankex, and Realty all traded lower in early deals.

Rate-sensitive sectors in the Indian stock market experienced significant declines today as the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) prepared to announce its latest policy decision. Auto, banking, and real estate shares were among the top losers, contributing to a broader market downturn.

Key Sector Performance

The BSE auto index fell by 542 points to 60,803, while the BSE Bankex lost 317 points, trading at 61,796. The BSE Realty index also slipped 47 points to 6495 in early trading hours. This widespread decline occurred as investors reacted to the anticipation of potential policy changes from the central bank.

Leading Losers Across Sectors

  • Auto Sector: Top decliners included Balkrishna Industries (down 1.96%), Bajaj Auto (1.65%), Tube Investments of India Ltd (2%), Bharat Forge (1.6%), and Maruti Suzuki (1.32%).
  • Banking Sector: Major banks like Union Bank (down 1.40%), Bank of Baroda (0.8%), Axis Bank (0.81%), PNB (1.07%), and SBI (0.6%) saw their shares fall.
  • Real Estate Sector: Shares of Oberoi Realty, Anant Raj, Lodha Developers, DLF, and Godrej Properties experienced drops of up to 1.22%.

Overall, the BSE Sensex declined by 422 points to 72,636, and the Nifty 50 slipped 164 points to 22,606.

RBI Policy Expectations and Market Focus

Market attention is squarely on the RBI Governor's monetary stance and commentary on the evolving growth-inflation dynamics. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that a 25 basis point hike in policy rates is largely anticipated and already factored into the market. However, the central bank's forward guidance and its view on the economic trajectory are expected to heavily influence market reaction.

A key consideration for the RBI is the interest rate differential between India and the US, which currently stands at very low levels. Analysts suggest that a rate hike could be unavoidable to preempt further capital flight, especially given rising US yields and a strengthening dollar. Stabilizing the rupee is also likely to be a priority for the RBI, alongside managing growth and inflation.

The six-member MPC, led by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, is set to announce its policy decision today, October 7. This review follows a period where the central bank maintained the benchmark repo rate at 5.25% for four consecutive meetings, after a cumulative 125 basis point reduction during 2025.
