Indian Railways: No Device Charging on Trains Between 11 PM and 5 AM

· · 3 min read

Indian Railways has directed zones to strictly enforce a rule disabling charging points on trains between 11 PM and 5 AM. This measure aims to enhance fire safety after a power bank explosion incident and prevent potential theft.

Indian Railways has issued a strict directive to all railway zones, mandating the enforcement of a rule that keeps charging points on trains switched off between 11 PM and 5 AM. This move comes as part of ongoing efforts to bolster passenger safety, particularly concerning fire hazards during overnight journeys.

Why the Overnight Charging Ban?

The primary impetus behind this stringent enforcement is fire safety. Officials note that faulty batteries, damaged charging equipment, or overheating devices pose a significant risk, especially when passengers are asleep and less likely to detect an issue promptly. A recent incident in the South Eastern Railway zone, where a passenger's power bank reportedly exploded and emitted smoke while charging, highlighted the critical need for adherence to this safety protocol.

Beyond fire risks, concerns about theft also play a role. Passengers often leave their devices connected to charging sockets unattended while sleeping, making them vulnerable to theft.

A History of Safety Directives

The Railway Board first issued instructions regarding the deactivation of charging points in June 2014. This followed a tragic fire in an AC three-tier coach of the Hazur Sahib Nanded-KSR Bengaluru Express in 2013. The Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, initially recommended switching off charging points in air-conditioned coaches between 10 PM and 6 AM. The Railway Board later standardized the window to 11 PM to 5 AM.

Enforcement Across Coach Types

Historically, enforcing this rule has been simpler in AC coaches, where centralized controls allow for easy deactivation of charging points. Non-AC coaches, however, presented a greater challenge, with earlier communications citing difficulties due to the need for additional staff and associated costs.

The latest directive emphasizes strict compliance across all coach types, signaling that passengers should no longer expect charging points to be active overnight, regardless of their coach classification.

Advice for Overnight Travelers

Passengers embarking on overnight train journeys are strongly advised to take proactive measures:

  • Charge Devices Before Boarding: Ensure mobile phones, laptops, and other electronic devices are fully charged before commencing travel.
  • Carry a Power Bank: A fully charged power bank is recommended as a backup power source.
  • Offline Information: Keep essential information, such as ticket details, destination addresses, and important phone numbers, accessible offline.
  • Conserve Battery: Utilize battery-saving features on devices to extend their charge throughout the journey.

It's important to note that this restriction applies only to the charging points themselves. Passengers are still permitted to use their phones and other devices during the journey; they simply will not be able to recharge them via the train's sockets during the specified six-hour window.
