Indian Equity Markets Stage Strong Comeback
Indian equity benchmarks concluded a five-session downturn on Monday, July 27, 2026, with both the Sensex and Nifty indices posting significant gains. This resurgence injected approximately ₹5.10 lakh crore into investor wealth, elevating the combined market capitalization of BSE-listed companies to ₹480.80 lakh crore, up from ₹475.69 lakh crore recorded in the prior session.
The 30-share BSE Sensex surged by 776.01 points, marking a 1.02% increase to close at 76,835.78. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty50 index climbed 228.50 points, or 0.96%, settling at 23,995.95.
Top Performers and Sectoral Gains
Leading the charge among Sensex constituents were companies such as Infosys Ltd, Bajaj Finance Ltd, ICICI Bank Ltd, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M), InterGlobe Aviation Ltd (parent company of IndiGo), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, and Asian Paints Ltd.
Sectoral participation was broadly positive, with IT, auto, pharma, healthcare, FMCG, media, and realty stocks emerging as the strongest performers. The broader market also reflected this positive sentiment, as the Nifty Smallcap100 advanced by 1.31% and the Nifty Midcap100 gained 1.11%.
Factors Fueling the Market Rally
Market analysts attributed the robust rebound to several key factors. Ankur Punj, MD & Business Head at Equirus Wealth, highlighted that investors reacted positively to a sharp decline in global crude oil prices. This, coupled with a recovery in international markets and an appreciation of the rupee against the dollar, spurred strong buying interest, particularly in IT, banking, and realty stocks. Punj also noted that the market's continuous decline in the preceding week, combined with a temporary pause in West Asia conflict news, encouraged buying in undervalued stocks.
Impact of Global Crude Oil and Geopolitics
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, echoed these sentiments, pointing to a pause in strikes in West Asia as a crucial factor. This development eased concerns regarding escalating import costs and inflationary pressures, thereby triggering a relief rally. The significant correction in crude oil prices, alongside a reduction in long-term bond yields, further bolstered hopes for a sustained resolution to geopolitical tensions and supported a 'long unwinding' trend.
Oil prices experienced a sharp drop after the US and Iran reportedly paused strikes over the weekend following two weeks of hostilities. This raised optimism for a diplomatic solution that could de-escalate the conflict and facilitate the resumption of shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz. At the time of reporting, Brent crude futures had fallen by $7.86 (8.12%) to $88.92 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined by $6.19 (6.93%) to $83.12 a barrel.
Domestic Economic Indicators Provide Comfort
Domestically, a narrowing rainfall deficit contributed to a more favorable inflation outlook. This was further supported by better-than-expected Q1 earnings reports from companies and a generally positive business outlook, as noted by Vinod Nair.
Nifty Technical Outlook
Looking ahead, Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, suggested that markets might remain volatile on Tuesday due to the expiration of NSE F&O contracts. From a technical standpoint, if the Nifty50 manages to move and sustain above the 24,000 mark, it could signal a continuation of the uptrend towards 24,250–24,300. However, a failure to hold above 24,000 might trigger a corrective phase, potentially pushing the index towards 23,800.
