Indian Markets Face Muted Open Amid Middle East Tensions, Rising Crude Prices

· · 4 min read

Indian equity markets are poised for a cautious opening Wednesday, influenced by elevated crude oil prices and rising global bond yields. Geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East continues to push Brent crude above $90 a barrel, impacting investor sentiment.

Indian stock markets are expected to begin Wednesday's trading session with minimal change, reflecting a global risk-off mood. GIFT Nifty Futures on the NSE International Exchange were down 24.60 points, or 0.10 percent, at 24,205.50, signaling a subdued start for domestic indices.

Global Cues and Market Performance

Wall Street closed lower on Tuesday, with semiconductor stocks leading technology declines. This downturn was primarily driven by escalating Middle East uncertainty, which pushed bond yields to multi-year peaks, fueling concerns about borrowing costs and inflation. The S&P 500 dropped 0.69 percent, the Nasdaq Composite shed 1.33 percent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.22 percent.

Asian markets also saw pressure, mirroring Wall Street's overnight losses. South Korea's KOSPI index plunged over 5 percent, while Japan's Nikkei was down 2.5 percent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng, however, managed to inch higher.

Crude Oil, Bond Yields, and Geopolitical Impact

Elevated crude oil prices and rising global bond yields are significant factors weighing on investor appetite for risk assets. Brent crude futures climbed above $92 per barrel after the temporary US-Iran ceasefire expired, with Iran adopting a more aggressive stance and the US ruling out an extension. The unresolved reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains a key monitorable for the rupee, inflation, and foreign investment flows, according to Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

Bond selling eased slightly in steady Asian morning trade, but the inflation outlook remains troubling as Brent crude futures stayed above $90 a barrel. This risk-averse environment has provided some support to the US dollar, though currency market moves were minor. Spot gold also saw a slight uptick, rising 0.2 percent to $4,342.33 per ounce.

FII-DII Flows and Market Sentiment

Provisional data from the NSE indicates that Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers of domestic stocks on Tuesday, offloading shares worth Rs 2,579.31 crore. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were net buyers, injecting Rs 1,651.53 crore into Indian equities. Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, advises a cautious, stock-specific approach with an emphasis on prudent position sizing and risk management given the subdued investor sentiment.

Nifty50, Sensex, and India VIX Outlook

The Nifty50 index continues to show weakness, having slipped below its 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) for the first time in several days, intensifying bearish sentiment. Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, noted that the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is in a bearish crossover and continues to decline. He suggests that overall sentiment might favor bears, with potential downside extending towards 24050–24000, where initial support is likely. Resistance is visible at 24240.

The Sensex formed a bearish candle with virtually no lower recovery, and its close below the 50-Day EMA signals a deterioration in its short-term structure. Sachin Gupta, VP of Technical Research at Choice Equity Broking, highlighted that the Sensex is trading below all key moving averages, and the RSI at 44.82 has fallen below the neutral 50 mark, indicating weakening momentum. He identifies 76,800–77,000 as a critical defense line; holding this zone could lead to a technical rebound towards 77,600–77,800, while a decisive breakdown could extend the corrective phase. India VIX remains relatively subdued at 11.39, suggesting the current decline is orderly rather than panic-driven.

Nifty Bank Outlook

The Nifty Bank index has been in a prolonged range-bound movement, causing key moving averages to flatten and reflecting an absence of a clear trend. Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, stated that momentum indicators and oscillators continue to signal a sideways bias, with the daily RSI moving in a narrow band for 29 trading sessions, reinforcing the consolidation phase.

For Nifty Bank, the 57,500-57,600 zone (20-day EMA) will act as crucial resistance. On the downside, 56,900-56,800 (100-day EMA) is expected to provide immediate support. A decisive breakout above resistance or breakdown below support will determine the next directional move. Bajaj Broking noted that within the consolidation, the index faces resistance around 58,000 levels; a move above this could target 58,500-58,700. A decisive break below 57,000 could extend the corrective move towards 56,500-56,200, which is a confluence of the 200-day EMA and the lower band of the broader consolidation range.
