India Launches E-OCI Card for 50 Lakh Holders, Eliminating Physical Booklets

· · 2 min read

India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched the e-OCI card, enabling over 50 lakh Overseas Citizens of India to access their credentials digitally. This eliminates the need for physical booklets and simplifies passport updates.

New Delhi, India – In a significant move towards digital governance, India has officially launched the e-OCI card, offering a fully digital alternative to the traditional Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) booklet. Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the new system in New Delhi on July 2, 2026, a development set to benefit more than 50 lakh OCI cardholders worldwide.

Digital Convenience for OCI Holders

The e-OCI card allows individuals to download their OCI credentials directly onto their mobile phones, making it convenient to present at immigration checkpoints and to airlines. This innovation aims to streamline the travel process and reduce the administrative burden associated with physical documents.

A major procedural change introduced with the e-OCI card is the elimination of mandatory booklet reissuance every time a cardholder obtains a new passport after the age of 20. Under the revised guidelines, OCI holders will only need to update their passport details online, a simplification long sought by the Indian diaspora.

The digital format offers several advantages, including reduced risk of loss or damage to documents, faster identity verification, and smoother immigration clearance. The entire OCI process—from application and document submission to card download—can now be completed online without any physical paperwork.

How to Access Your E-OCI Card

For existing OCI cardholders, the Bureau of Immigration, Government of India, has outlined a straightforward process to access their digital card:

  • Visit the OCI Services Portal at ociservices.gov.in.
  • Log in using your existing User ID and Password. If you haven't registered, complete the registration with the email address used during your original OCI application.
  • Navigate to the 'e-OCI' tab on the dashboard.
  • Locate your application details and click on 'Generate e-OCI Card' in the last column.
  • The digital card will be generated and made available for download. Save it to your mobile device for future use.

It is important to note that existing physical OCI cards remain valid and do not need to be surrendered.

FCRA 2.0 Portal Also Unveiled

Alongside the e-OCI card, Minister Shah also launched the FCRA 2.0 Portal. This upgraded platform digitalizes the entire compliance process under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, covering applications, renewals, and annual returns. The portal incorporates Aadhaar-based authentication, e-Signatures, OCR-based document analysis, and integration with various government databases, aiming to serve nearly 14,500 active FCRA-registered organizations.
