The Indian government has given its nod to a significant proposal from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to introduce polymer-based banknotes. This initiative will see the initial issuance of one billion pieces each of ₹10 and ₹20 denominations for rigorous field trials across the country.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary confirmed the approval in a written statement to the Lok Sabha, detailing that successful trials would pave the way for the regular issuance of these new notes. The primary objective of this pilot phase is to assess how effectively the polymer currency withstands the varied climatic and usage conditions prevalent in India.
The Rationale Behind Polymer Notes
The RBI's compelling case for transitioning to polymer banknotes is rooted in their superior durability. International studies cited by the central bank consistently show that polymer notes boast a significantly longer lifespan compared to their traditional paper counterparts. This enhanced longevity presents a practical advantage for a nation like India, which experiences a high volume of currency circulation and wear and tear.
Complementary, Not Competitive
As the introduction of polymer notes is still in its nascent stages, the RBI maintains a measured stance regarding their potential impact on digital payment ecosystems. The central bank communicated to the government that any effects on digital transactions could only be accurately assessed once the polymer notes are in regular circulation. The RBI emphasizes that banknotes and digital payment systems are not competing tools but rather complementary instruments, both serving the public simultaneously.
Paper Currency Remains
A crucial clarification stemming from the Lok Sabha reply is that the new polymer banknotes are intended to circulate alongside existing paper-based currency. There is no current proposal under consideration to phase out paper notes in favor of polymer substrate-based alternatives. This ensures continuity and choice for the public as the new currency is gradually introduced.
