Government Measures to Secure Fuel Supply
India is actively implementing measures to enhance its fuel security and reduce reliance on imports. Junior Oil Minister Suresh Gopi confirmed that state-run fuel retailers, including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, have been selling 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders at ₹942 in Delhi since June 2026, incurring a revenue loss of ₹188 per cylinder in August.
LPG consumption in India declined by over 16 percent year-on-year last month, reaching 2.35 million tonnes. This shift has pushed households and industries towards alternative fuels like PNG, biomass, and kerosene. To counter this, the government has set maximum LPG production targets for domestic public and private sector refineries, aiming to create a significant supply buffer.
Furthermore, India is looking to diversify its LPG import sources, with plans to source at least 15 percent of its 2027 LPG imports from the US via term contracts, potentially increasing this share to 25 percent. The Centre has also approved an incentive scheme for city gas distributors, effective September 1, 2026, to accelerate the expansion of household PNG connections. This initiative aims to reduce LPG imports, cut subsidy expenditures, and broaden access to cleaner cooking fuel across the nation.
