India Attracts FIIs Amid 'Anti-AI' Trade Shift, Mahajan Says Market Ripe for Return

· · 2 min read

Foreign institutional investors are returning to India, ending a four-month selling streak in July with Rs 20,200 crore in inflows. Complete Circle CEO Kshitiz Mahajan highlights India's appeal as a 'perfect market' amidst a global 'Anti-AI' trade reversal from overvalued markets.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have shown a significant return to the Indian market, breaking a four-month selling streak by injecting Rs 20,200 crore in July. This resurgence comes as India positions itself as a prime destination for global capital, particularly amidst a rebalancing of investment strategies away from certain 'Anti-AI' trade plays in other emerging markets.

India's Market Strengths Attract FII Inflows

Kshitiz Mahajan, CEO of Complete Circle, expressed strong optimism regarding the Indian market's outlook. He pointed to several key factors underpinning this positive sentiment, including robust Q1 earnings, strong performance in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, impressive July auto sales data, and a favorable monsoon forecast.

Mahajan anticipates that August will set the stage for continued money flow back into India, predicting a sustained return of FII inflows throughout the second half of the calendar year. This forecast is particularly relevant given the recent shift in global investment patterns.

The 'Anti-AI' Trade Reversal and India's Position

The concept of an 'Anti-AI' trade refers to a move by investors away from markets that have seen significant corrections or still carry high valuations, often linked to speculative enthusiasm around artificial intelligence. Mahajan specifically noted emerging markets like South Korea and Taiwan, which have experienced substantial corrections and where valuations remain elevated.

In this context, India emerges as an attractive alternative. Its strong domestic fundamentals and comparatively reasonable valuations make it a compelling market for FIIs looking to diversify and find growth opportunities outside of the 'Anti-AI' bubble.

Geopolitical Stability and Market Confidence

Market sentiment was further bolstered by easing geopolitical tensions. Reports indicated that US President Donald Trump's comments regarding Iran helped de-escalate a potential conflict, leading to a significant drop in Brent crude oil prices by 7% to $81.93.

President Trump stated that a planned attack on Iran, which he described as potentially the "biggest attack since World War II," was called off following urgent requests from Middle Eastern allies. This development has paved the way for fresh negotiations aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and achieving the denuclearization of Iran, contributing to a more stable global economic environment.

The combination of a continued reversal in the global AI trade, robust domestic earnings, and reduced geopolitical risks has collectively lifted investor confidence, making India a focal point for renewed foreign investment.
