The Central Government of India has approved the construction of a fourth railway line through the highly strategic Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the ‘Chicken’s Neck.’ This significant infrastructure upgrade, planned for the Malda-New Jalpaiguri section, is set to substantially increase rail capacity for both passenger and freight traffic.
Initially, a third line was proposed for this crucial railway corridor. However, the Ministry of Railways has now given its sanction for a fourth line, underscoring the government's commitment to strengthening connectivity to India's northeastern states. This expansion is expected to bolster national security, improve logistical resilience, and facilitate regional trade, alongside enhancing the movement of people and goods.
Strategic Significance of the "Chicken's Neck"
The Siliguri Corridor, a narrow strip of land in West Bengal, spans approximately 20-22 kilometers in width. It serves as the sole land link connecting the eight Northeastern states with the rest of mainland India, making it a geopolitical choke point of immense importance.
Given its critical role, expanding railway infrastructure through this corridor is vital. The additional capacity is poised to provide a more robust and reliable connection, which is crucial for both economic development and strategic defense in the region.
Broader Infrastructure Development in the Region
The approval of the fourth line is part of a wider infrastructure push across the Katihar division. Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway, emphasized the strategic importance of the Malda-New Jalpaiguri section, highlighting the Railways’ special focus on capacity expansion along this corridor.
Alongside the new line, several other key projects are underway. The New Jalpaiguri railway station is undergoing rapid redevelopment, with completion anticipated by April 2027. Work is also progressing on doubling the line in the Barsoi section, further enhancing the region's rail network.
Another major initiative includes a nearly 29-kilometer double-line underground project planned between Tinmai Ghat and Bagdogra. Plans for this underground stretch commenced in February, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had previously outlined special connectivity plans for the 'Chicken's Neck' corridor in the Railway Ministry’s budget allocations for FY226-27.
The Northeast Frontier Railway network has also achieved 100% electrification, with efforts ongoing to accelerate electric train operations. Future plans include introducing new local train services from Jogbani, Radhikapur, and Balurghat to improve connectivity in border and remote areas. Furthermore, Vande Bharat services are slated for extension beyond Guwahati to Tinsukia and Agartala, promising faster and more comfortable travel options for passengers in the Northeast.
Upon completion, these comprehensive projects are expected to transform the entire rail corridor, supporting more organized development and significantly improving connectivity across the region.
