New Delhi, India — The Indian government has issued a stern advisory to shipping companies, directing them to avoid deploying Indian seafarers on vessels transiting through the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Persian Gulf region. The move comes in response to a series of recent attacks on merchant ships, which have led to the deaths of two Indian seafarers and injuries to several others.
The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) underscored that the safety, security, and welfare of Indian seafarers, alongside the security of Indian ships, are paramount. Incidents involving vessels such as the MT Al Bahiyah, MT Mombasa, GFS Galaxy, MT WEDYAN, and AL REKAYYAT have significantly escalated the risks faced by crews and commercial shipping in the conflict-affected area.
Enhanced Vigilance and Precautionary Measures
In light of the deteriorating security situation, the DGMA has mandated enhanced precautionary measures. Masters of all vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and adjacent waters are now required to maintain a heightened level of security vigilance. This includes continuously monitoring navigational warnings, security advisories, and updates from competent authorities, while also implementing all applicable security protocols.
Specifically, the directive instructs “Ship owners, ship managers and RPL companies” to “avoid deploying Indian seafarers on vessels undertaking voyages involving passage through the Strait of Hormuz until further orders.”
India's Role and Diplomatic Response
India holds a significant position as the world’s third-largest supplier of seafarers, with over 300,000 sailors contributing to global shipping fleets. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has previously voiced deep concern over these attacks. Following the incidents involving the Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, which carried 30 Indian seafarers among a combined crew of 46, the MEA summoned Iran’s Deputy Ambassador to lodge strong protests against the assaults.
This latest government advisory aims to safeguard Indian personnel amidst ongoing regional instability and ensures that shipping operations prioritize human life above all else.
