SBI Group to Offload 1% Stake in National Stock Exchange's ₹30,000 Crore IPO

· · 2 min read

State Bank of India (SBI) and its investment arm, SBI Capital Markets, plan to divest a combined 1% stake in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) as it prepares for a substantial ₹30,000 crore initial public offering. This move will see SBI offload 0.65% and SBI Capital Markets 0.35%.

The State Bank of India (SBI) and its investment banking subsidiary, SBI Capital Markets Ltd, are set to divest a total of 1% of their combined holdings in the National Stock Exchange (NSE). This strategic move comes as the NSE prepares for its anticipated ₹30,000 crore initial public offering (IPO).

According to SBI Chairman C S Setty, the country's largest lender will offload 0.65% of its stake, while SBI Capital Markets will divest 0.35%. This combined divestment represents a significant step for the SBI group as the NSE gears up for one of India's largest market debuts.

Details of the SBI Stake Divestment

Chairman Setty confirmed the group's participation in the divestment, stating, "We propose to divest 0.65 per cent and 0.35 per cent by SBI Capital Markets because both of us hold the stake. So together, about 1 per cent as a SBI group... it could be less depending on any other shareholders joining." Currently, SBI holds 3.23% in the exchange, with SBI Capital Markets retaining 4.33%.

Broader Monetisation Strategy

This announcement follows a recent successful dilution by SBI and its partner Amundi in SBI Mutual Fund. That public issue, valued at ₹9,800 crore, saw a remarkable 42-times subscription, reducing SBI's holding from 61.76% to 55.46%.

Setty clarified that while the group is participating in the NSE IPO stake sale, there are no immediate plans for monetisation of its other subsidiaries. The divestment in NSE is seen as a strategic decision tied directly to the market operator's significant public offering.

The National Stock Exchange's IPO is poised to be a landmark event in the Indian capital markets, and the participation of major institutional shareholders like the SBI group underscores the scale and importance of this upcoming listing.
