The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather forecast for the coming week, predicting varied conditions across the country. While several regions are bracing for significant rainfall, others are set to experience persistent heatwave conditions and rising temperatures.
Heavy Rainfall Alerts for Multiple Regions
Eastern, northeastern, and southern parts of India are expected to receive widespread rainfall activity. The IMD has specifically warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states:
- Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely between June 14 and June 19, with another spell of heavy rain on June 20.
- Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha: Heavy rainfall is anticipated on June 14.
- Bihar: Heavy showers are forecast for June 16.
The Northeast is set for an active monsoon spell throughout the week:
- Arunachal Pradesh: Heavy rain on June 15-16 and June 19-20; very heavy rain expected on June 17-18.
- Assam and Meghalaya: Heavy rain during June 14-16 and on June 20; very heavy rainfall likely between June 17 and June 19.
- Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura: Heavy rainfall is forecast for June 14-15.
Southern India will also experience an active monsoon:
- Kerala and Mahe: Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from June 14 to June 20, with heavy rain likely on June 14.
- Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal: Heavy rainfall expected on June 16-17.
- South Interior Karnataka: Heavy rainfall likely from June 16-18.
- Coastal and North Interior Karnataka: Heavy rainfall anticipated on June 17-18.
- Telangana: Heavy rainfall forecast from June 18-20.
Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) are expected across Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema over the next few days.
Heatwave and Rising Temperatures
In contrast to the wet spell, northwest and central India are expected to see a gradual increase in maximum temperatures. Temperatures in northwest India could rise by 4-6 degrees Celsius until June 18, with central India experiencing a similar increase until June 16.
Heatwave conditions are specifically forecast for:
- Marathwada: Isolated pockets from June 14 to June 17.
- Vidarbha: Isolated pockets from June 14 to June 16.
Hot and humid conditions are also expected to persist over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra during June 14-17, with warm night conditions likely over Konkan and Goa between June 14 and June 16.
Advisory for Fishermen
The IMD has issued a warning advising fishermen to avoid venturing into several parts of the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea between June 14 and June 19 due to anticipated adverse weather conditions. This advisory covers the Gulf of Mannar, the south Bay of Bengal, areas adjoining the Odisha coast, parts of the Andaman Sea, and sections of the Arabian Sea.
