· · 4 min read

IIM Bangalore's inaugural undergraduate programs have seen overwhelming demand, with 12,000 applicants vying for just 80 seats. The new residential BSc (Hons) programs in Data Sciences and Economics begin August 31, 2026, supported by Tata Trusts.

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) has launched its first full-time undergraduate programs, attracting an unprecedented level of interest. A staggering 12,000 students applied for only 80 available seats across two new residential Bachelor of Science (Honours) programs, underscoring the high demand for quality undergraduate education from the esteemed institution.

The inaugural batch is set to commence classes on August 31, 2026, marking a significant expansion beyond IIM Bangalore's traditional postgraduate offerings. This new venture is supported by a strategic partnership with Tata Trusts, leading to the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore – Dorabji Tata School of Undergraduate Studies.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing this collaboration was signed on August 21, 2026, by Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, and Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, IIM Bangalore. Siddharth Sharma, CEO of Tata Trusts, and Prof U Dinesh Kumar, IIMB Director-in-charge, were also present at the signing.

Under the agreement, Tata Trusts will provide substantial philanthropic support, contributing to the establishment of academic infrastructure and influencing the school's strategic direction, policy formulation, and governance frameworks.

Setting New Benchmarks for Undergraduate Education

Noel Tata emphasized the long-standing legacy of Tata Trusts in seeding defining institutions that have shaped generations in India. He highlighted that this partnership arrives at a crucial time when India requires institutions capable of competing on a global scale to fuel its next phase of growth. The new school aims to establish fresh benchmarks for undergraduate education and make a lasting contribution to the nation's academic landscape.

Dr. Devi Shetty echoed these sentiments, stating that the collaboration with Tata Trusts would provide a robust foundation as IIM Bangalore ventures into undergraduate education. He underlined the institute's distinguished history in creating transformative educational opportunities and expressed confidence that the partnership would facilitate the development of an ambitious, multidisciplinary model of education for future learners.

Innovative Curriculum and State-of-the-Art Campus

The two four-year, full-time residential programs on offer are a BSc (Hons) in Data Sciences with a minor in Economics and a BSc (Hons) in Economics with a minor in Data Sciences. Each program will accommodate 40 students, forming the highly selective first cohort.

The new undergraduate school will operate from a dedicated residential campus situated approximately 23 kilometers from IIMB's main Bannerghatta Road campus, in the Jigani-Anekal area. This purpose-built environment is designed to foster interdisciplinary learning, research, and a strong focus on emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and data science.

Prof U Dinesh Kumar described Tata Trusts' contribution as a "historic gift" to both IIM Bangalore and the broader goal of institution-building. He noted that the school's development aligns with a period where AI is profoundly transforming businesses, governments, and society. Through world-class infrastructure and research capabilities, IIM Bangalore intends to create an ecosystem where students can effectively engage with the challenges of an AI-driven world.

Future-Ready Learning and Research

The new campus will feature modern academic facilities, comprehensive student accommodation, and infrastructure designed for accessibility. Beyond physical facilities, Tata Trusts' support will also enhance research and academic capabilities in critical areas, including artificial intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems, and applied business learning. IIM Bangalore plans to recruit a dedicated multidisciplinary faculty to support these new programs.

Siddharth Sharma, CEO of Tata Trusts, articulated the necessity for undergraduate education to evolve beyond specialized knowledge due to the rapid changes in technology and artificial intelligence. He stressed that students would need the ability to think across disciplines, pose new questions, and apply their learning to real-world challenges.

As the 80 selected students embark on their academic journey on August 31, 2026, IIM Bangalore formally enters the realm of full-time undergraduate education, promising a forward-thinking and globally benchmarked learning experience.
