Shares of IFCI Ltd. experienced a significant rally on Friday, climbing as much as 12 percent to reach a fresh 52-week high of Rs 107.45. This marks the third consecutive session of upward movement for the stock, driven by growing investor optimism surrounding the long-anticipated Initial Public Offering (IPO) of the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
The NSE IPO Connection Fuels IFCI Gains
The intensifying buzz around the NSE's public listing is particularly relevant to IFCI due to its indirect exposure to the exchange. IFCI holds more than 50 percent ownership in Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL), which, in turn, owns over 4 percent of the National Stock Exchange. Consequently, any positive developments or increased prospects for an NSE listing tend to significantly influence investor sentiment towards IFCI.
IFCI's Remarkable Market Performance
On Friday, IFCI's stock opened at Rs 96.01, surpassing its previous close of Rs 95.92, and quickly ascended to Rs 107.45 during intraday trading. This strong performance positioned IFCI as the top gainer on the BSE for the day. The recent surge has pushed the stock above the Rs 100 mark for the second consecutive session, a level it had not consistently maintained since December 2007, when it briefly touched Rs 107. For nearly 19 years prior to this rally, IFCI's share price had remained below this psychological threshold.
Progress on NSE Listing Prospects
The renewed buying interest in IFCI coincides with indications that the NSE IPO process is nearing its next critical stage. Reports indicate that SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey previously stated the regulator was close to approving NSE's draft red herring prospectus (DRHP). Recent developments surrounding the exchange have further bolstered expectations of significant progress toward the proposed listing.
The proposed NSE issue is reportedly poised to value the exchange at an impressive Rs 5.26 lakh crore, approximately $55 billion. NSE originally filed its draft prospectus with SEBI in June, outlining plans for existing shareholders to sell up to 148.9 million shares, representing about 6 percent of the exchange's total equity.
Over the past month, IFCI's stock has delivered a sharp run, gaining approximately 35 percent. The unfolding narrative around the NSE IPO has clearly emerged as a primary catalyst for this renewed investor interest in the state-owned financial services company.
