Major Indian technology companies are rapidly integrating artificial intelligence into their daily operations, moving beyond experimental phases to widespread adoption. Firms such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro, and LTM have collectively procured over 400,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses in less than six months, marking one of Microsoft's fastest enterprise AI rollouts.
This significant shift underscores a broader trend in India, where 78% of AI users report being able to perform tasks previously impossible a year ago, compared to a global average of 58%. According to Microsoft's 2026 Work Trend Index for India, 32% of the country's AI users are classified as 'Frontier Professionals'—employees actively redesigning work processes with AI agents. This figure is double the global average and the highest among the ten markets surveyed.
AI Reshaping the Nature of Work
Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India & South Asia, emphasized that this is not merely faster execution of old tasks but the emergence of entirely new work. "A year ago, India said it would build human-agent teams at scale. The data now says we are doing it," Chandok stated, highlighting that work is changing, not ending. He also noted that effective AI users are those who 'interrogate AI' to maximize its potential.
Enterprise-Wide Productivity Gains
The impact of AI integration is evident across these IT giants:
- TCS: 86% of Copilot-licensed associates actively use AI daily, embedding it into reporting, meeting management, documentation, and analysis. Teams report 20-25% productivity improvements in research and content production, twice-as-fast insight generation, and a 25-35% reduction in work-cycle time for selected processes.
- Wipro: Monthly active usage of Microsoft 365 Copilot exceeds 95%. Associates generate 7.5 million prompts monthly and average 23 actions per user weekly, saving over 250,000 full-time-equivalent days each quarter. Wipro has also fostered agent building, with more than 29,000 end-user-developed agents and 60 enterprise-grade solutions in use. Their appraisal agent has reduced performance review effort by nearly 70%.
- Infosys: With a goal to deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot to over 100,000 employees, Infosys sees more than 91% monthly active users across delivery, engineering, and corporate functions.
Specialized AI Applications
Beyond broad enterprise adoption, AI is being tailored for specific functions:
- Persistent Systems: The company is integrating AI into everyday HR workflows through AssIstX, a platform that delivers HR services directly within Microsoft Teams and Outlook, allowing employees seamless access to support.
- Wipro: The iSkill Agent acts as a personalized learning copilot within Microsoft 365 Copilot, recommending role-based AI and cloud learning paths at an enterprise scale.
Building a Frontier Enterprise
Balakrishna D R, Executive Vice President and Global Services Head for AI and Industry Verticals at Infosys, noted that a 'frontier workforce' is just the beginning. "Building a Frontier Enterprise requires more than technology. Organisations that are realising sustainable value from AI are those that combine leadership alignment, workforce readiness, governance, and intelligence embedded across the business," he explained. Infosys's experience demonstrates that enterprise-wide AI adoption can accelerate innovation, strengthen decision-making, and drive measurable business outcomes, moving beyond experimentation to responsible scaling.
