HPCL Investigates Fire at Rajasthan Refinery, PM Modi Event Postponed

· · 2 min read

A fire erupted at the HPCL Rajasthan refinery in Balotra district, prompting an investigation and delaying Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled inauguration. Initial reports indicate a hydrocarbon leakage caused the incident, with no injuries reported.

Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) has launched an investigation into a fire that broke out at its Rajasthan refinery site in Balotra district. The incident, which occurred ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned inauguration, led to the postponement of the high-profile event.

Investigation Underway

According to HPCL, the fire was localized within the heat exchanger circuit of the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) section. Prima facie evidence suggests a leakage of hydrocarbons through a valve or flange caused the blaze. Emergency response teams quickly brought the situation under control, and the company confirmed no loss of life or injury to personnel. The CDU, Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU), and other units in the affected section were promptly isolated and are structurally safe.

Rajasthan Chief Secretary V Srinivas and Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma are visiting the site to review the situation. The Ministry of Petroleum has also confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and implement necessary remedial measures. HPCL stated that the financial and operational impact is being assessed but is not expected to be material.

PM Modi's Visit Postponed

Prime Minister Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the refinery on April 21, but the event has now been postponed, with a new date to be announced soon. The Pachpadra refinery is a significant undertaking, representing India's first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex, built with an investment exceeding Rs 79,450 crore.
