For generations, gold has been a cornerstone of wealth preservation in many households, particularly in India, valued both as jewellery and a tangible asset. However, a new contender is emerging in the alternative investment landscape: the luxury handbag.
Luxury Handbags as Alternative Assets
The debate over whether a high-end designer bag could rival gold as an investment gained traction with a recent story from Dubai. A woman reportedly sold all her wedding gold jewellery to fund a collection of Hermès handbags, believing they offered a pathway to preserve and potentially grow her wealth.
Adam Abraham, co-founder of luxury resale company Love Luxury, noted this incident reflects a growing trend. Affluent buyers are increasingly viewing luxury handbags as investment assets rather than mere fashion statements, appreciating their potential to retain or increase value in the robust resale market.
The Unique Case of Hermès Birkin and Kelly Bags
Not all luxury handbags qualify as investments. The strongest arguments are typically made for Hermès’ Birkin and Kelly bags. Their scarcity, exclusivity, and intense resale demand have created a market where prices often exceed original retail figures.
According to a report in Fortune, Hermès quota bags are not readily available to all customers. Buyers usually require a significant purchase history, and boutiques receive limited, often unpredictable, quantities. This controlled supply drives many eager buyers to the secondary market, where prices can be substantially higher.
James Firestein, founder of luxury resale and authentication platform OpenLuxury, told Fortune that "the resale value of Birkin and Kelly bags had outpaced gold over the previous decade." He further cited cases where owners doubled their initial investment by holding a Birkin in pristine condition for several years.
However, Firestein also cautioned that the value of these bags is highly dependent on factors like color, material, and condition. Shifting trends and demand can make such purchases a gamble, even for a coveted item like a Black Togo 30 Birkin, which he noted doubled in value over five years.
Gold: The Traditional Standard
In contrast, gold has a universally recognized value and a far broader, more liquid market. It has traditionally served as a reliable store of wealth, easily convertible to cash when needed, unlike the niche market for luxury bags.
Investment or Enjoyment?
For most investors, the choice between a luxury bag and gold isn't straightforward. While a handbag might appreciate, its resale value hinges on rarity, impeccable condition, verified authenticity, and finding a willing, specific buyer. Gold, with its established global market, offers far greater liquidity and a more predictable investment profile.
Radhika Gupta, MD & CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, emphasized this distinction at the India Today Woman Summit 2026. She advised investors to separate assets that merely hold value from those that constitute a reliable financial investment.
Regarding luxury handbags, Gupta's advice was clear: "enjoy them, but do not build a financial plan around the expectation that their value will rise." She likened betting on a resale gain to "winning a jackpot."
Her broader message applies equally to gold jewellery and high-end bags: an asset becoming more expensive does not automatically make it a sound investment. For portfolio planning, the focus should be on an asset's ability to genuinely build wealth and, critically, its accessibility when funds are required.
