· · 2 min read

Hindustan Zinc reported a consolidated net profit of ₹5,469 crore for Q1 FY27, a 145% increase year-on-year, driven by higher metal prices and production. The company also announced Amarendu Prakash, former SAIL CMD, as its new CEO, effective August 1, 2026.

Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), a prominent Vedanta Group company, reported a significant increase in its consolidated net profit for the first quarter ended June 30, 2026 (Q1 FY27). The company's profit surged by 145% year-on-year, reaching ₹5,469 crore, up from ₹2,234 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.

Alongside its robust financial performance, Hindustan Zinc announced a key leadership change. Amarendu Prakash, former Chairman and Managing Director of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer and Whole-time Director, with his tenure commencing on August 1, 2026.

Strong Financial Performance Driven by Key Factors

The substantial profit growth was underpinned by a 76.90% rise in revenue from operations, which climbed to ₹13,747 crore in Q1 FY27, compared to ₹7,771 crore a year ago. HZL attributed this strong performance to several factors, including higher metal prices, increased metal production, enhanced lead concentrate sales, improved by-product realisations, and a favorable US dollar exchange rate.

As of June 30, 2026, Hindustan Zinc maintained a healthy financial position with gross investments and cash totaling ₹12,892 crore. The company's total outstanding borrowings stood at ₹7,320 crore, and it reported strong free cash flow before growth capital expenditure of ₹5,253 crore.

CEO Highlights Operational Success

Arun Misra, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of HZL, commented on the company's achievements, stating, "Our debottlenecking initiatives continue to enhance refined metal production and reinforce our position as one of the world's lowest-cost zinc producers." Misra also emphasized the growing demand for zinc, driven by global infrastructure development and the ongoing energy transition, reaffirming HZL's commitment to responsible growth and long-term stakeholder value.

New Leadership for Hindustan Zinc

The appointment of Amarendu Prakash marks a new chapter for Hindustan Zinc. Prakash brings extensive experience, having dedicated over three decades to India's steel sector. Before joining HZL, he served as Chairman and Managing Director of SAIL from 2023 to 2026, where he was instrumental in leading initiatives focused on operational excellence, capacity expansion, digital transformation, and overall organizational performance.

In related market activity, HZL shares were trading 0.26% higher at ₹532.50 on Friday, following the announcement of its Q1 results and leadership transition.
