Himachal Apple Harvest Plummets by Two-Thirds Amidst Severe Weather, Exports Halted

· · 2 min read

Himachal Pradesh apple production has fallen by two-thirds this year to just 10 million boxes, down from an optimum 30 million. Erratic weather conditions, including early snowfall and El Niño, severely impacted quality and supply for domestic markets, virtually halting exports.

Apple production in Himachal Pradesh has experienced a dramatic decline this year, with output plummeting by two-thirds due to adverse weather conditions. The state, a significant contributor to India's total apple yield, produced only about 10 million boxes of apples (24 apples each) compared to an optimal 30 million boxes.

Ravinder Chauhan, President of the Apple Grower Association of India, highlighted the severity of the situation. "This year the crop is very low in Himachal Pradesh and even the quality of apples is not very good. This is due to the bad weather conditions over the last one year," Chauhan stated. This shortfall has led to a severe shortage for domestic markets and virtually eliminated any surplus for export.

Erratic Weather and El Niño Impact Harvest

The sharp drop in the Himachal apple production is primarily attributed to erratic weather patterns throughout the past year. Early snowfall in the higher reaches of the Himalayas, combined with the broader influence of El Niño, has created unfavorable growing conditions for the fruit.

These climatic disruptions have not only reduced the overall quantity but also compromised the quality of the apples harvested. With domestic demand partially met by imported apples, the economic impact on local growers is substantial.

Future Outlook Remains Uncertain

Concerns are mounting that the challenges could extend into the next season. The early snowfall and ongoing effects of El Niño raise fears that the 2027 apple crop in Himachal Pradesh could also be adversely affected, posing a sustained threat to the region's vital agricultural sector.

Himachal Pradesh plays a crucial role in India's apple industry, accounting for approximately 20% to 22% of the country's total production, second only to Jammu and Kashmir. The consistent disruption to its apple harvest therefore has wider implications for national supply and pricing.
