HDFC Bank Shares Rebound After 52-Week Low Amid Legal Win & CEO Retirement News

· · 3 min read

HDFC Bank shares rebounded from a 52-week low, fueled by a legal victory in Bahrain concerning Credit Suisse AT-1 bonds. This comes as CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan announces his retirement effective October 2026.

HDFC Bank Ltd. shares saw a notable rebound on Thursday, recovering from a fresh 52-week low of Rs 686.20 to close 0.75 percent higher at Rs 692.40. Despite this intraday recovery, the stock has experienced a significant decline of 30.11 percent year-to-date.

Legal Victory Boosts Investor Sentiment

The bounce in HDFC Bank's stock price was largely attributed to an Economic Times report indicating a major legal win for the bank. HDFC Bank successfully defended all seven cases filed against it in Bahrain by investors in Credit Suisse Additional Tier-1 (AT-1) bonds. These cases alleged mis-selling of high-risk securities.

  • The High Civil Court of Bahrain issued favorable orders for HDFC Bank on September 9 in the final two proceedings.
  • Five similar cases had previously been rejected by the Bahrain court between July and August.

The report suggests this outcome provides significant relief to the lender by resolving a key legal overhang. Business Today noted it could not independently verify the report at the time of publishing.

CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Retire

Adding to the significant corporate developments, HDFC Bank Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan has announced his decision not to seek another term. He is set to retire from the bank at the close of business hours on October 26, 2026. The bank's board acknowledged Jagdishan's communication, stating that despite attempts to persuade him to reconsider, he reiterated his decision. The board confirmed it would expedite the process of selecting and appointing his successor well within the stipulated timeframe.

Analyst Outlook: Should You Buy?

In light of these developments, market analysts offered varied perspectives on HDFC Bank's stock:

  • Kranthi Bathini, Equity Strategist at WealthMills Securities: Suggested that investors with a long-term view could consider holding the stock given its current valuations. He also advised that fresh accumulation might be considered due to the bank's historical performance and robust business model.
  • Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services: Highlighted the stock's approximately 30 percent decline in 2026 and noted that business growth remains weaker compared to its peers. Singh also raised concerns about potential rate hikes if crude oil prices remain above $100. However, he concluded that the sharp correction could present an opportunity for accumulation at lower levels, setting a target price of Rs 850.
