Entrepreneur Calls for Urgent DU Infrastructure Overhaul
Entrepreneur and former Shark Tank India judge Ashneer Grover has issued a stark warning about the deteriorating state of Delhi University's (DU) infrastructure, advocating for a substantial ₹20,000 crore (approximately $2 billion) investment. Grover's appeal comes in the wake of a tragic building collapse in Satya Niketan, which underscored critical safety issues and the severe shortage of adequate student accommodation.
Grover emphasized that affluent families with bright children are increasingly opting for foreign universities due to mounting concerns over campus safety, outdated facilities, and a general decline in the quality of life at Indian institutions. His remarks have reignited a crucial debate about the funding deficits plaguing one of India's most prestigious public universities.
The Satya Niketan Tragedy and Its Implications
The urgency of Grover's call is directly linked to the devastating incident on September 6, when a four-decade-old, five-storey paying guest (PG) accommodation building in Satya Niketan collapsed. The tragedy, located near DU's South Campus, claimed seven lives, including five students who had recently returned from holiday breaks.
Investigations revealed that a dangerous combination of severe basement waterlogging and ongoing excavation work led to the failure of a critical pillar, causing the entire structure to crumble. While rescue efforts saved 12 individuals, the catastrophic event laid bare Delhi University's profound housing crisis. Despite its more than 90 affiliated colleges, only 19 provide hostel facilities, forcing the vast majority of outstation students into largely unregulated private accommodations.
Driving Talent Overseas: Grover's Warning
Taking to social media platform X, Grover articulated his concerns, stating, "Delhi University infra is crumbling. Jo afford kar sakte hai - aur jinke bachhe honhaar bhi hai - woh bhi foreign university isiliye bhejte hai apne bachho ko ! Safety and quality of life first." He further stressed the necessity of a significant capital injection to elevate DU to a world-class institution.
His argument highlights a growing trend where parents prioritize the safety and overall campus environment alongside academic reputation. Outdated buildings and a perceived poor quality of life are key factors driving India's brightest students to seek education abroad, posing a long-term challenge to the nation's talent retention.

While Grover's proposed $2 billion figure is an independent estimate and not an official university or government proposal, his intervention has successfully brought the issue of infrastructure funding to the forefront.
