HDFC Bank Shares Climb 3% After Court Ruling, CEO Succession Focus; Adds ₹23,352 Cr.

· · 2 min read

HDFC Bank shares surged over 3% following a favorable court ruling on Credit Suisse AT1 bonds. Investors are also keenly watching the bank's MD & CEO succession, with the board submitting two candidates to the RBI for consideration.

Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd. rose by more than 3% in Tuesday's trading, adding approximately ₹23,352 crore to its market capitalization. This uplift came as investors reacted positively to two key developments: a favorable court decision regarding Credit Suisse AT1 bonds and ongoing discussions surrounding the bank's top leadership succession.

Court Ruling Boosts Investor Confidence

The Bahrain High Civil Court dismissed all seven cases filed against HDFC Bank by investors concerning the Credit Suisse AT1 bonds. The final two proceedings were rejected on September 9, following the dismissal of five similar cases in July and August. HDFC Bank stated that the court concluded investors had not provided sufficient admissible evidence to substantiate their claims or establish that their losses were attributable to the bank.

Focus Shifts to Leadership Succession

Meanwhile, significant attention remains on the appointment of HDFC Bank's next Managing Director & CEO. The bank's board has submitted a list of two candidates to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year tenure. The primary question revolves around whether the regulator will approve an internal candidate or an external banker.

Analyst Views on Leadership

Deputy MD & CEO Kaizad Bharucha is widely considered the internal candidate for the top position. Reports have also mentioned potential external candidates, including Anup Bagchi of ICICI Prudential Life, HSBC's Hitender Dave, and Citibank India's K Balasubramanian.

Foreign brokerage Nomura weighed in, suggesting that an internal appointment could initially support the stock by removing uncertainty and ensuring continuity, given Bharucha's familiarity with HDFC Bank. However, Nomura also noted that a credible external candidate could offer a longer runway and a cleaner slate, potentially leading to a more significant strategic reset and re-rating for the stock over the medium term. Nomura maintains a 'Buy' rating on HDFC Bank, with a target price of ₹950, valuing the stock at 1.9 times its March 2028 book value per share.
