After a decade navigating the demanding landscape of top-tier technology companies, Charmie Kapoor, an alumna of both Harvard and IIT, has shared her profound reflections on stepping away from the conventional 9-to-5 grind. Having built a career at firms like Microsoft, Razorpay, Dunzo, and Unacademy, Kapoor's decision to leave her full-time role a few months ago marks a significant shift, one she describes as feeling "different" from previous sabbaticals.
Embracing Freedom Beyond the Corporate Calendar
Kapoor candidly spoke about the initial adjustment to life without a regular monthly salary notification, acknowledging its previous role in subconsciously reassuring her financial stability. However, the absence of a rigid calendar quickly proved "liberating." The initial weeks were spent day-by-day, exploring activities previously unattainable due to work commitments. This included completing personal projects, assisting founder friends with design work, delving into design beyond digital screens, and establishing a daily workout routine.
Her break also saw her experimenting with a small mango toast delivery venture, hosting friends for extended periods, and dedicating more time to community contributions. Kapoor noted, "What surprised me is how much of a job I never noticed I was doing just to get through a job," highlighting the often-unseen labor of commuting, meetings, and task transitions that previously structured her life.
A Philosophical Journey: From Existentialism to Absurdism
The hiatus prompted a deep dive into the meaning of life, leading Kapoor to explore philosophical perspectives such as nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism. She recognized that for most of her life, she had unknowingly operated as an existentialist, driven by setting goals, caring deeply about them, and striving to "win" – a mindset that fueled her ambition.
Now, Kapoor feels herself "sliding toward absurdism." This shift is evident in her new daily rhythm: swimming at 2 PM, working only when genuinely inspired, engaging in lengthy breakfast conversations, and creating things simply for the joy of their existence. She has also begun producing and publishing design content online, a creative outlet unconstrained by corporate objectives.
Rejecting the 'Perfect' Opportunity for a New Balance
In a testament to her changed priorities, Kapoor revealed that she recently turned down a "near-perfect" role at a "hotter startup in the world." Despite traveling to meet the team, the opportunity failed to ignite the passion she once would have felt. She reflected that just a few years prior, she would have eagerly convinced herself to accept such a prestigious offer.
Kapoor concluded her reflections by describing her current state as a "newfound balance between existentialism giving me happiness and absurdism giving me peace." As she headed off to a 5 PM pickleball game, her words resonated with many online, who shared similar sentiments of seeking freedom and defining life on their own terms, rather than those dictated by society or corporations.
