Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to make a significant delivery on Friday, September 18, enhancing India's indigenous aerospace capabilities. The state-owned aerospace giant will hand over Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Final Operational Clearance (FOC) twin-seater trainers and HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
In a separate but related move, HAL will also deliver Dhruv Next Generation (NG) helicopters to Pawan Hans Limited (PHL) at a ceremony in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
This triple handover event underscores a crucial milestone in India's journey towards self-reliance in the defence and civil aviation sectors. The Ministry of Defence highlighted that the event will showcase the expanding ability of HAL and its industry partners to design, develop, and manufacture advanced platforms.
High-Profile Attendance
The ceremony is expected to draw high-ranking officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu. They will be joined by Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, and HAL CMD Ravi K.
The government has consistently prioritized indigenous design, development, and manufacturing in aerospace and defence. The induction of these new platforms is viewed as a vital step in strengthening domestic capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers for critical aviation technology.
Context of Tejas Deliveries
The handover of the Tejas trainers comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding delays in the broader delivery schedule for Tejas Mk1A aircraft to the IAF. The initial order for 83 Mk1A aircraft, which includes 73 fighters and 10 trainers, was slated for deliveries beginning in 2024, with completion by February 2028.
However, the program has faced setbacks, primarily attributed to the late supply of F404-IN20 engines from GE Aerospace, identified as a key bottleneck. Despite these challenges, the current handover signifies continued progress in specific aspects of the Tejas program and India's overall aerospace ambition.
